Edit: Short version: I have a clogged duct in my armpit. It hurts like a bitch! Help! What do I do?

Unncessary extra info: (Last night some time this pain in my armpit developed and it's still there this morning. It's pretty tender to the touch, but not hot or red. I don't feel any lumps,my boobs were not engorged last night, and I'm not feeling other symptoms. Any ideas what could be up?

ETA: found a small lump. Ugh. I'm going to try to make DS eat like a pig this am them pump of it's still around.

Is a clogged duct at this point mastitis? Or not yet?)

  • I got lumps in my armpit with mastitis. Get in to see your doc ASAP. You think it hurts now? Oh boy....it can get worse. :( The meds help super quick though! Good luck!

Eek! This is for the birds. I'm just waiting around 10 minutes before my doctor's office opens to call!

  • This just happened to my Sister-in-law who is still nursing her 7 mo old. It ended up being an infected lymph node, completely treatable.

Do you know what they did for it?

  • If it is a clog and hasn't progressed to something worse (I hope!) I find putting heat on my breasts before pumping really helps. I use a little microwave heat pad and put it on the sore area (over my clothes so I don't burny skin) for a few minutes before I start to pump. I usually keep it on while pumping too. Also, it hurts, but massaging the area a bit while you pump helps as well. I EP now but I always found heat and massaging was easier while pumping than BFing when I was BFing. Babies are great at getting them out if you don't need to massage it though.

  • Everything @RachelCA29 said! Massaging and heat are huge helps. The big difference between a clogged duct and mastitis was the pain (clogged ducts hurt but mastitis is on a completely different level) and the sudden onset of flu-like symptoms.

  • If it is a clogged duct, try a hot shower, massaging the area, heating pad, and most of all, having the baby drink out of it.  Try putting them in a position to where their chin is pointing in the direction of the clog.  So if it is in your armpit, you'd want to position them like a football hold.

Got a prescription called in so it doesn't develop further into mastitis. I just started with heat! Thanks ladies! I hope this thing clears up quickly!

  • Sorry u have that! I have had one particular duct clog a couple of times and it hurts. I just nurse and pump a lot more and massage the duct (which sucks). It clears upquickly that way. I try to clear it before it gets infected.
