When to organize/clean/sort baby clothes

I need to pull out DS1's newborn to 3 months clothes to wash and get ready.  I'm itching to do it now - I think I have the nesting instinct pretty strong this time.  However, with 11 weeks to go, I'm thinking it's too early because I don't want the clothes sitting around too long, collecting dust/old dresser smell.  When do you think is a good time?  6 weeks out?  4 weeks out?

I plan on taking a day off of work to do this and other organization, so that's why I'm trying to plan ahead (that and there is so much crap going on for DH and I right now, that I'm getting obsessive about things I can control!).

Re: When to organize/clean/sort baby clothes

  • We have been given soooooo many clothes! At first I thought I'd wait until after my shower to go through it all and see what to keep/ exchange/ donate, then wash the keepers all together, but crikies that'll be a lot of laundry to start sorting at 37wks... I think I'll wash the stuff I know I'll keep within the next month or so as I start getting the nursery in order. If the next 6 wks go nearly as quickly as the last 6 wks did, I'll need to start, like, yesterday.

  • I'm itching to wash everything and set up too, even with 14 weeks left! lol Last time I think I did it around 32ish. I'll probably do it around then this time too, just because I can't wait to. lol

  • Yeah, I think I may aim for 34 to 36 weeks.  Maybe 34 weeks because I have to see how much long sleeve stuff I need.  It was 80 degrees when DS was born.  I'm finding it hard to wait!

  • Oh man, I started a few weeks back! I feel so antsy about getting everything ready though! My eldest starting back at school, my husband proctoring, my insane school schedule... I realize his clothes probably won't be as soft as they were fresh out of the dryer, but at least it's done! We still need to paint and decorate his room! I'll probably end up re washing some items before he gets here but the majority is already done!

  • Great question! I'm still waiting on our downstairs room to be finished so I can begin to empty the babies room and get it started..... Ugh y'all are so lucky to be able to be this ready already.
  • This post makes me want to do it even more :P. As soon as my grandpa finishes her dresser (he's re-staining it) I'll probably start doing little things to keep me at bay lol.

  • I already started. I washed and sorted the new things, but still need to dig out DD's old stuff. Thank goodness they will be born in the same season.

  • I just got out all of our old baby clothes this week and purchased some long sleeved outfits to fill in the gaps since most of my 0-3 month stuff is for warm weather.  I am just about to put a load in the wash right now (I'm 30 weeks tomorrow).  I also plan on getting the infant car seat installed in the next week or two since I need to figure out the best configuration in my van for the three carseats!

I like to have everything taken care of well in advance just in case :)

  • Yes, glad for this post, I've been wondering myself. - we've gotten a lot of clothes from my sister-in-law and right now all of those, plus the gifts we've gotten here and there, are currently taking up his whole crib.  I'll be at 30 weeks this weekend.  I think it would be good to get some of that washed and put away before my showers in September and October.

  • I'm anxious to get this done as well but am planning on waiting until I have somewhere to put them! We are getting the nursery painted on monday and then I'll set it up next week, so I guess I'll wash and organize sometime in September. I don't think there is a reason to wait unless you're concerned about taking tags of clothes you may want to return or exchange.

  • I have started to wash things little by little. We are getting a box of my nephew's old clothes next week so wanted to get ahead of myself.
  • I pulled my baby clothes out of storage and even though it's been four years, they all smell just fine.  So I put them in the dresser weeks ago.

  • I did it last weekend.

Not even due till the end of November.

  • I've been doing it as I've been collecting things. I have bought a lot of second hand items so I've been washing those right away and the new items I've bought have gotten washed too. I still have to organize everything by size and decide what I'll put in the dresser vs. hang and whatnot, but I'm getting there. My shower is the end of September, so I anticipate that will be a little overwhelming and I'll have a lot to organize then, so I wanted to get a head start while I could.
  • Oh... I've already started this! LOL

  • I have washed some stuff already, but it was more to get rid of the packaging smell. I will probably start the major washing in a few weeks.

I also have to get my cloth diapers prepped, so I am kinda feeling over whelmed by the amount of laundry I need to do for her.

  • I'm 28 wks & dying to start everything. I was 3 wks early with my son so I'm not taking any chances with this one. Prob in another 2 wks or so I'll sort through everything & wash it. Also I'll be packing my hospital bag then. I'll try to wait a little longer before I cook & freeze some meals. I'll hold out till October.
  • I am eager to start now but my BIL & family is visiting from Germany and staying in the baby's room until mid September. I've been redirecting my nesting urges to my office and to the kitchen pantry. I am SO eager to get the baby clothes washed and set up! I am just going to wash the hand me downs plus few new favorites/items I know I will use. I am concerned that LO will outgrow the newborns or I get too many of the same sizes and it is hard to predict if he'd actually wear them all. I'm thinking of washing the new ones as I go along.
  • Is it bad to have clothes hanging up that are washed already? What happens if you wash it already?

  • What kind of detergent is safe to use on baby clothes?
