I'm sorry, everyone, I just need to rant and cry here.
My husband is self-employed so we have private insurance and have been paying about $650 month for our family of three. However, about a month and a half ago we got notice from our insurer that our plan was being discontinued because they did not comply with ACA and that meant we would have to find a new plan. After jumping through flaming hoops for the past month to get them our paperwork I finally called back this morning and we got approved. My husband applies for a 73% cost share plan which is great, but because I am pregnant I can only qualify for Medicaid. Our daughter only applies for a state-funded childs care program (basically, kids Medicaid).
The birth center that I was planning on giving birth at is located in a different state so they can not accept my Medicaid coverage. My pediatrician does not accept the children's care program. So basically, I'm fucked. I'm going to either have to find a home birth midwife who can take me on and pay a ton of money to her, or go outside of insurance and pay a ton to the birth center (over 5K). I don't even know what we're going to do about a Pediatrician.
This was supposed to be my relaxing day with my mom watching Adeline so I could get homework done but now I feel sick to my stomach and am fighting back tears.
**So, after re-reading the ACA website where it clearly says that private insurers can't turn you down for pregnancy, I called our health connection department and spoke to someone different who told me that I do not have use Medicaid despite what the previous woman told me. I kind of want to punch dispatcher #1 for telling me that was my only option. We will not qualify for any reduced rate because we are turning down Medicaid for my daughter and myself, but we should be able to at least find a more affordable plan for our family and I won't have to change providers. Once baby #2 is born we can re-apply again (oh joy) and will most likely qualify for reduced rates. What a pain in the ass. I'm really grateful that our country is making steps in the right direction towards coverage for all, but it seems like the system still needs a lot of work.**

Maybe a more constructive place to start would be to accept that you might not get healthcare from where you wanted and start making lists of where your new plans ARE accepted.
Certainly there must be more options than a home midwife that is covered by Medicaid!
Aren't there GPs that can care for your child that take Medicaid?
I'm sorry you're disappointed. The US healthcare system is really f-ed up!

This is all something I can handle and I know it's not the end of the world, I was just so comfortable and happy with the birth center it's hard for me to even fathom going somewhere else. It also really sucks that I have to find a new pediatrician for Adeline.

I freaking hate insurance rules in this country.
Is there a birth center in your state that might take your new insurance? It might be worth looming into. It's not the ideal, but it would be better than paying OOP or going to a hospital that you're not comfortable with.
Once the baby is born will you and your daughter be eligible for a better insurance plan? If so maybe you could only change pedis temporarily. Good luck!
