I had to share this because it could be helpful for others. DS (1st grade, pdd-nos) had his "meet the teacher" yesterday and I was crushed that I couldn't go because I am at a conference- DS couldn't go either because he was out of town. So I sent DH who did quite nicely. The teacher seems great. She gave DH this poem with a little baggie of glitter. It's "jitter glitter" and you're supposed to sprinkle it on your kids head the night before the first day of school to get rid of the jitters and allow for a good nights sleep. DS has been having ongoing sleep issues and was very excited about this stuff and asked for some last night. He's a pretty logical kid so I know it's not going to last longer than a few days, but he slept soundly last night so I'll ride that train as long as I can.
Side note re: the sleep issues. We've made progress but are still not sleeping through the night. He is sleeping in his bed each night, but DH and I have to alternate waking with him every night. We met with a pysch for intake and have a full eval in a month. I had been on a waitlist for almost a year but all it took was one terse phone call and a spot magically opened. The psych predicted that the treatment plan will look like individual skills training for DS (starting with this sleep anxiety) with simultaneous parent training for DH and I. I hope it all goes as well as it sounds on paper. They do IQ testing which I think will be interesting for school use. DS has some emerging super powers in math. I know it's not unique amongst the ASD crowd, but he's starting to surpass me in terms of problems he can solve! It does wonders for his confidence level.
Re: Jitter Glitter; first day of school anticipation
