Measuring big?

Hey all!
I went to the doctor today because I was having severe abdominal cramping(turns out I'm a wuss and it's round ligament pain). The doctor I saw which isn't my normal doc told me that he thinks I'm measuring ahead and ordered an ultrasound for Tuesday. Should I be concerned or is this a good thing?

Re: Measuring big?

  • Fundal height measurements are not an exact science.  If you are measuring 2cm behind or ahead from where you should be according to your due date, an u/s is typically done to figure out why the measurements are not adding up.

It could be nothing, your due date may be off, multiples?, breech baby, placenta previa, too much amniotic fluid.

  • With DS I measured 3 weeks ahead for most of the pregnancy. We also had an additional ultrasound to check and make sure everything was alright. He was just a big baby. :)

  • They led me to believe with my DS he would be a 13 lb behemoth the whole pregnancy (I exaggerate but they scared me into thinking thats what I was gonna give birth to) and ya know what.......

My son weighed 7 lbs 6 oz which is like the definition of the 50th percentile.. as they said, its not an exact science dont worry about it like I did.

  • My doc thought I was measuring maybe a week to week and a half ahead of where my dates say I should be. I haven't had an ultrasound yet, as I am only going to get the one anatomy scan at 20-22 weeks. She wasn't worried about it. She said there is a small chance I could have twins and that would be the reason I'm bigger, but given my last two pregnancies I tend to run a little larger and have a little extra amniotic fluid. I also may have a larger baby this time compared to my last two. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Have you already had one ultrasound for dating?  I personally wouldn't go rushing in for an ultrasound for no real reason. animalcrckr  is right, fundal height measurement isn't an exact science, it's more like best educated guess.  I would check with your normal doctor, as your normal doc probably has a better idea how your body is doing compared to a new doc who hasn't examined you before and is calling for unnecessary ultrasound testing.  If you weren't aware  ACOG only recommends ultrasound used only for real medical need in pregnancy, which you'd be getting an anatomy scan in a month anyway. But I may just be overly cautious when it comes to ultrasound technology use during pregnancy.

  • I don't know if it's multiples but my husband is a twin and twins are due in my family. The doctor today said it might be twins but he won't know until the ultrasound. I'm thinking it's just a big baby but DH thinks and wants it to be twins. I guess we will find out :D
  • I measured a week big according to all the ultrasounds with my first. I had to get induced for medical reasons at the end on her due date. She was 7 lbs 9
Oz so I think like others said it's just an educated guess. We thought for sure she would be early based on what they kept saying she was measuring big the whole time. Nope she didn't and she wasn't big.
  • With my first I measured ahead because I had a lot of amniotic fluid. I had to have weekly non-stress tests and ultrasounds because they wanted to check on baby. He came out 8 lbs 6 oz and was perfect
  • brittyirene  twins run on your maternal side not the fathers side.... chances of spontaneous twins are less than 3 percent but you never know....

I am measuring three weeks ahead with twins... like pp said.. it isn't an exact science so I wouldn't worry at all.

This was us too. I was sure we were breaking records with the way the doctors talked...my son was 8lbs...perfect size and weight. Don't let them scare you. :)
