2nd Trimester

Trouble with weight maintenance/gain

I am 18 weeks pregnant and I am having trouble just maintaining my weight. I have lost 25lbs so far during my pregnancy. I have potassium issues and struggled with Hyperemesis during the 1st trimester. My doctor wants me to use the food diary in the my fitness pal app. I have been for over a week now and I can't even meet my daily caloric intake for myself--not to mention the extra 300 calories I should be taking in for baby. I feel like I am force feeding myself most days and I still come short 500 calories on my best day. What (other than eating junk food) can I do to add on the calories? Has anyone else had this problem?

  • My doctor suggested milkshakes with protein powder when I was having problems gaining weight. (Too bad I'm lactose intolerant). I just made a conscious effort to snack between meals and soon my hunger caught up so I didn't have to force feed myself anymore.

  • While I prefer the whole, natural food options noted above, another option is something like Ensure. I had trouble eating enough for a long time with this pregnancy, so I would have an Ensure high-protein drink, often cut with 2% milk, as a snack.

  • I'm down 10 pounds from my pre-preg weight. I had started gaining weight (3 pounds) but at my last appointment I was back down the 3. I've been trying to snack on peanut butter, fruit, and any other food I fancy during the day. I really dont eat a "meal" anymore it doesnt seem like. I just munch all day. Still  not doing much for my weight gain but I get at least close to my calories every day.
  • Having trouble gaining enough weight over here, too. My dietician is pushing more protein and healthy fats. I add hard boiled eggs, cheese, nuts, etc. wherever I can. I gained a lb. this week since starting that so I think it helps! Good luck!
