I haven't had breast surgery but if the surgeon did a good job you can totally breastfeed! I have a close friend who EBF with fake tits without any major issues that I'm aware of.
My other friend who really struggled with it had surgery to correct inverted nipples at the same time. It was when she was like 18/19, and the doctor never told her that he was severing basically all the ducts to do it and that she would not be able to properly breastfeed. She was still able to produce a very small amount from one breast, out of a single duct . Needless to say, it was devastating for her that she felt this surgeon did not properly inform her of the risks of the surgery-- since at the time her concerns were purely cosmetic. Doing that is NOT routine though, so if you had a properly performed augmentation, you would not face that issue as a matter of consequence.
She was still dead set on breastfeeding, so she used a supplemental nursing system, and all of her lactating friends, including me, pitched in to provide her with donor milk.
I think there also different ways of doing boob jobs. Something to do with where they place the implants? I'm not sure, don't quote me on that, my hairdresser about it.
Dr. Jeffrey Salomon, an assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, said breast implants do not interfere with a women's ability to breast-feed. The implants are placed under the breast gland, either above or under the pectoralis muscle, he said.
"There is no disruption of the breast gland or the milk ducts to the nipple in either instance," Salomon said.
I've seen it both ways, those moms who have had no problems and some that couldn't express anything. For the most part there is rarely a problem as most doctors who do women of child bearing age know that that is a potential need in the future. Just make sure you let your nurse know when your go in that way they can assist you the best way.
Thanks ladies ! I have the crazy story of wanting big boobs all my life ,getting a BA then 2 months later finding out I was pregnant. I am going for the BF routine and I hope it works out , Dr said it should I just am a little concerned.
It was explained to me that it was better to go under the muscle than over, so that no part of the actual breast tissue, etc was ruptured.
I went under the muscle for many reasons but all surgeons at my consults (4) told me it shouldn't interfere as there is no correlation, and you may/may not be able to nurse based on other factors.
