What to expect after egg retrieval....

So I've had a much slower and poor response than everyone expected, so of course the time DH took off from work doesn't coincide with my egg retrieval on Friday. He'll be able to take me to and from the appointment but I'll be alone after. Will I be able to drive later in the afternoon to get my kids from camp/day care? I have friends who offered to help I was just curious how everyone felt...

Re: What to expect after egg retrieval....

  • I don't have any input as I have yet to do ER. I just wanted to say I'm bummed for you that your response isn't what you wanted. I too am supposed to be a poor responder and it didn't occur to me that the date would be pushed back that much. Big hugs.

  • I am still a little over a month away from my first ER experience so I can't give you specifics...but, I am fairly certain that if they give you any type of anesthesia you are not supposed to drive for the rest of the day.  Sorry things are not going according to your plan-I know that would be frustrating :/

  • Yes, you will be able to drive, but you may be VERY uncomfortable. It's different for everyone, I'm extremely sore for several days, but I am able to get up and move around and get things done.

  • Thanks ladies...looks like I didn't even need to post this....things didn't go well today at my appointment.   I have to wait to see what my blood work shows and speak with the doctor but it looks like my cycle will be cancelled and converted to an IUI.  I have one lead follie measuring 21mm, one 16mm and two 15mm.  I also have some fluid in my uterus so if we do convert to an IUI I'm assuming it would be for nothing since an egg probably won't implant with fluid hanging out there.  I told the NP that if the doctors were on the fence at all about whether to proceed of not that I would like to go for the egg retrieval since IUIs didn't work for me in the past, but we'll see what they say later today.  I feel numb.

  • Thanks so much for all of the support ladies!!

My doctor just called me, I like him so much just hearing his voice made me tear up.  He said he wanted to call me personally to express how sorry he was about my response.  We knew things were going to be bad but no one expected this bad.  He said that he wanted me to go ahead with egg retrieval for Friday anyway.  He said there is a good chance we'll get 3 eggs, possible more, and it's worth a shot.  I know we might just be delaying the inevitable but I want to keep fighting.  So egg retrieval will officially be on Friday.  I'll keep everyone posted!!

  • Best of luck on Friday!!

It partially depends on the type of anesthesia you are given.  For my last retrieval, I was told I could not drive for 24 hours.  But, even if they hadn't told me that, I wasn't really where I could drive for at least 12 hours.  I've had 5 retrievals and I really didn't feel like driving the day of on any of them.  However, I needed to pick up my husband after his car broke down on the way to pick up dinner after my third retrieval.  I picked him up and it wasn't a problem.  But, this was also at least 12 hours after the retrieval.

Physically, I've had to go to work or do things around the house the day after retrieval.  I don't always feel like it (I am usually sore).  But, it has been manageable for me.  That said, the last two retrievals were this year (a little before and just after my daughter turned 2) and  while I could do a lot of things, I didn't feel up to carrying my daughter much the day of.  My husband would hand her to my while I was sitting but that was about it.
