Advice for going back to work?

Today is the last day of my maternity leave and I return to work on Monday.  I am a complete wreck just thinking about it.  I can't imagine leaving my son (even though I found a day care I really like) b/c I am SO attached to him.  I'm also worried about pumping at work.  Any advice for making the transition period easier?  Also any tips for successful pumping at work??  TIA!

  • I know it's hard - I thought I would DIE the first day, but honestly, it gets a little better each day. You'll quickly get into a new routine and before you know it everything will be second nature. The anticipation of going back to work was actually worse for me then going back to work! I don't pump, so I don't have any advice for you there, but good luck!

  • The only small piece of advice I have is to have a freezer full of dinners ready so you can quickly get dinner out of the way and have the rest of the evening to spend with your baby. I've been back for 6 weeks and I still have good days and bad days - regardless though I miss him terribly. The thing that really helps is knowing that he seems to really like his day care provider, the other kids love him and I know he's getting a lot of interaction and fun time that I wouldn't be able to give him at home. It's really tough - just don't be too hard on yourself. One of my friends told me it took her a good 9-10 months to get used to the routine and juggle of being a working mom and I can totally see that it would take that long.
  • It was hard at first but you get into a routine and the day goes by.  Try to pump every three hours you are away from home.  Once you have confrimed you have enough supply then try to bring it down to two.  I started with Two and was not getting enough.  I went to three and it was better but I just started to take Blessed Thistle and this has really helped.  The first weeks was hard and then I found Sundays to be hard.  I hate Sunday nights!!!  Just remember your baby knows you and is not going to forget you.  No one can replace a mom.
