Easy Healthy Eating?

Hello ladies! So I just left the Doc at 23 weeks, and she seemed concerned my weight jumped so much. I've never been a terribly unhealthy eater, as far as fast foods and sweets, but I love cereal, bagels, pasta... and I was told I need to cut back on all these and other carbs. It is so hard for me to find affordable yet healthy snacks and recipes, does anyone have any ideas? I really don't want to be gaining too much weight!  Thanks :)

Toast with breakfast instead of a bagel...add some peanut butter. I keep fruit and veggies on hand especially in easy snacking form (doubles as easy to add to a salad). Hummus has been great. Helps that I am craving watermelon. Pasta I have swapped out for a quinoa based pasta or brown rice based. These have me feeling fuller faster and for longer than the regular pasta. Any time I make a pasta I try to throw in at least 1 vegetable (spinach, peppers, etc).

  • This is one of my favourite cookbooks: https://www.doitdelicious.com/cookbooks/double_delicious
All the recipes are easy, delicious and incorporate some type of veggie puree (which does not take over the taste).

My work is very full-time and so if I don't have a chance to grab some fruits or veggies during the day, I grab a smoothie. The "Mighty Kale" is my favourite at Jugo Juice (Canada only); it has kale, spinach, mango, pineapple, apple and orange Juice.
  • Cut out all refined sugar and starches. There are no real health benefits to these anyhow. Eating foods that come from the earth is best. Veges, fruits, nuts, dairy (hormone free). protein from beef, fish, chicken, etc. Your local farmers market will provide all of these to you for great prices, plus your supporting your local economy :D

I'm a sucker for sweets and chips and salsa and have found great recipes on Pinterest to satisfy my sweet tooth (look up paleo deserts) and munch on plantain chips and salsa all the time! Trader Joes has a lot of great options at great prices too! Just lookout for non GMO products when you shop!

One last thing.... One of my favorite paleo cookbooks is called Against All Grain!
  • Primal eating. I try to stick with the 80/20 approach (80% Primal, a version of paelo). Check out Mark's Daily Apple.

  • Two words: breakfast frittata. Throw some eggs or egg whites (5 or 6), lots of cooked spinach, cheese, ham or turkey sausage in a bowl, mix together, pour into a greased 9x13 and bake at 350 for 50 mins to an hour. Slice it into 8 pieces and store it in a tupperware in the fridge. In the morning, just throw a piece of it in the microwave for breakfast and have it with some yogurt and/or fruit. It's good bc you don't have to think about how you're going to get your protein in - it's done for you.
