Baby's first food?

What was your baby's first food?

We are going to be starting soon (finally!). I'm not sure that it really matters what is first? Maybe I'm over-thinking it?

Also, a dumb question, but do you steam avacado first? Or just puree it as is?

Re: Baby's first food?

  • I voted rice cereal, but his first real food was sweet potato. At Longhorn. Off my plate. It was just a bite or two.

  • I don't think it especially matters what you start with. My mom advised me to do veggies before fruits so he learns to like foods that aren't sweet. I don't know if there's any truth there or not. (But we haven't done fruit yet.)

  • I did banana first.

You don't need to steam avocado.  Just mush it.  Same with the banana.

@djtippiestoes does this mean I also don't need to puree avocado and banana? Just mush and serve?
    :-??
  • We also did banana first. I just mushed the banana until it was really soft. LO loved it!

  • Btw I definitely over thought solids. After like six days of worrying, I decided he was getting squash one night and away we went.

  • Alphonso mangoes. The best tasting mangoes in the world and he loved it. I did not even purée and the pulp is so soft just off the fruit. LO licked the seed off and really enjoyed it.

Oatmeal first for us. We also use oatmeal to thicken other purées. So far he's had all the foods my book recommends for 6 months except apples (because I'm lazy about peeling them). He really likes pears and sweet potato, likes peas and bananas ok, and is not as excited about avocado. DD didn't love avocado either at first but now she can eat a whole avocado in one sitting. The no sweet thing didn't matter for us with DD. We did a lot of fruits at first, but she still had no problem with boring veggies like plain cauliflower.

  • Bananas!

When our pedi talked about starting solids at the 4 month appointment (we waited until 6 months), he said they've really loosened their guidelines on what to start with first.  He said it doesn't matter at all what you start with and move to next, it's totally up to you.  He said we can give him what we eat, just made so he doesn't choke on it.  He even told me (jokingly, to a point!) that he would even be fine with us throwing pizza in a blender for him.

  • Her first attempt at food was a banana-apricot puree. The first food she actually liked though was oatmeal cereal, and she's really just now, at 6.5 months enjoying the purees and the sampling of table food we've given her (a little chicken, bread, etc)

    I just mushed.
  • Oatmeal. Jenna isn't a huge fan of purees. She spits all of it back out, like it's too thinned for her. If I thicken it up with oatmeal, she'll eat it! We've done pureed bananas, pears, peaches, sweet potato (she finally decided she liked this last night!), peas and green beans (not a fan of either).

@Missy0483‌ idk if you're buying or making purees, but if you're buying, I like the beechnut "just" purees. They're thicker than the gerber. My LO does really well with them.

  • We started at 5m with oatmeal, and have moved up to purees. She has tried carrots (not a fan!), peas, sweet potatoes, green beans, and now pears. So far she has liked everything besides the carrots. We'll try the carrots again later-it may have just been the fact that it was the first one we tried.
We started out with a jar of each food (beechnut brand, I think), and I'll make her food after that one jar. I want to get a feel for what she likes, so if she hates something, I know not to make a ton of it.

Our Angel was born sleeping at 20 weeks due to IC.

  • First was the oatmeal cereal, the first puree was green beans. He loved it. I've tried bananas, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, applesauce and squash. He hasn't been a fan of the sweet things, so we're gonna stick to just veggies for a while. And I've been using the Gerber purees.
  • @shellbell3845 thanks for the tip!! I've always used Gerber, so I didn't know others were more on the thicker side.

  • Add me to team Don't Overthink It.  I was so obsessive about following all recommendations with DS1 (veggies first, no sweet fruits, the color order, etc.) and with DS2 I just did whatever.  And DS2 is by far a better eater.  I don't think it matters!

  • We tried rice cereal first but she only had a few bites then never wanted to eat it again, the first food she ate the whole jar was bananas

  • We did oatmeal first, pretty early to work on some weight gain (per our pedi). We waited about a month to introduce other options, and we started with sweet potato puree.
