Using formula after an hour

LO's last bottle of the day is usually formula. Last night he fell asleep before finishing it, and after a couple of tries to encourage him to take the last two ounces I gave up and put him down. I put the bottle in the fridge in case he woke up hungry within the hour.

DH took the morning feed, saw the half empty bottle, assumed it was breastmilk, and fed it to LO. I know the rules with formula are that you're supposed to throw it out after an hour once LO has started drinking it.

LO seems fine. Anything I should look out for or be concerned about?

Re: Using formula after an hour

  • Just once I'm sure it's fine. If LO looks ok I wouldn't worry, just don't make a habit of it.

  • Honestly, we reuse after up to 2 hours and I will reheat it once as well. Ds has no problems. Alimentum is very expensive, so I try not to dump a lot of it out.

  • I refrigerate and reuse all the time. That crap is too expensive to waste.

  • I think if it hasn't made him sick then it's fine. The concern is bacteria growth so it would be like food poisoning or something and you'd see the effects.

  • If Eden only takes a few sips of a bottle I do the same thing. I just replace the nipple the next time she drinks from it. I won't refrigerate it again after the second time though. That's when it gets dumped.

  • Thanks, ladies!  The formula label is really militant about DISCARDING AFTER AN HOUR so we've always done that...but lately I've been wondering if it isn't partially a ploy to get you to go through and buy more formula. I mean, I'm sure there is concern about safety, but if it's in the fridge...:-/
  • If LO only drinks half a bottle or whatever I take the nipple off , put a cap on and refrigerate
Like other posters have , I only will do it once tho . Second time I throw it out .

  • My thought would be that the formula companies want to avoid law suits. Throwing it out after an hour is probably the sweet spot where the risk increases for potential bacteria growth.

Frankly I think they go way overboard. If you ever had powered milk then that stuff will last a couple of days when made up. Formula is just expensive powered milk so I think they are being safe than sorry. in saying that, babies digestive and immune systems aren't fully developed so that may be why the caution.

Though I have never reheated it, used it at room temp up to an hr later but that's just a personal thing.
