Tipping related

I stopped by one of those frozen yogurt places today to surprise DS. It's self serve for both the froyo and the toppings. When I paid with credit card, the slip had a spot for tips. Thought that was weird, but would have brushed it off except there was also a giant rooster with a tip jar on the counter. The sign read "rooster only eats cash!! Don't let him starve!". Am I off base, or would you be put off for just blatant requests for tips at a self serve place?

Also, after I got DS all excited for his treat, he took one look and said "I want French fries!".

    I feel like I often see tip lines on receipts at places where I don't tip. I never thought twice about it.

    At fro-yo places around here, there's usually just one or two workers at a time. They're not just acting as cashiers. They clean, refill the machines and toppings, etc. That's all part of the service. So a tip jar doesn't seem out of place to me. Slightly obnoxious note on there, but I don't side-eye the tip jar itself.

    Cleaning and refilling machines and toppings isn't part of the service, it's part of the job. ;

    Wait, what's the difference? It's a waiter's job to bring you food and we tip for that. I'm not seeing your distinction between job and service.

    Anyway, I don't think it's necessary to tip at a fro-yo place, but it's part of the food service industry where tipping is par for the course. I really don't see an issue with a tip jar.

    In most cases, servers don't make minimum wage. I'd be willing to be they do at the froyo place. I'm a hostess and I do to go orders and there is a line for tips, but I do make minimum wage. It's just the way the machines are set up.

  • I don't see an issue with the tip jar either. A lot of places have them and some have obnoxious notes like that. The ones at Tijuana Flats come to mind. I usually don't tip in that situation but if there's something on there begging for tips I'm definitely not tipping. That would not fly at my job because it looks desperate. You should never make a customer feel like that.

  • I wouldn't tip. I wouldn't really care if they had  a tip jar. Call me old fashioned, but I like a tip jar to just say "tip jar"

    I guess I don't see a waiter's job as just bringing me food. I tip on the experience - refilling drinks, recommending food, making sure the food comes out correctly, etc. I don't feel like the fro-yo place employees are enhancing my dining experience. I enhance it all by myself with gobs of melted PB sauce.

    Ah, ok. Gotcha.

    So is the argument that you should only get tips if you do not earn minimum wage? I'm not sure I can get behind that. I tip delivery men. I tip bell hops. I even used to get tips from regulars when I was a cashier at a liquor store back in college.

    Or is the argument that they just shouldn't have the tip jar? Because to me tip jars are just normal in the food service industry.
    The "rules" are different for other things. I was just talking about the food industry. My hairstylist makes minimum but I tip her because she cuts my hair the way I like. Tip jars don't bother me. But I notice it without a sign or ~*~TiPS!!!~*~ all over it. And yeah, that makes me a little less inclined to put my change in there.

  • I just assume the tip line on the credit card is due to the processor and register they use.  I then promptly ignore the tip line.

    I am a generous tipper when tipping is due.
  • The one tip jar that I appreciated was at the Pita Pit.  It said "A Tip is Pita spelled backwards."

    I liked that.
