spin off on washing clothes...

Are you going to use Dreft or another detergent for LO's laundry?

I switched us all over to Tide (or Purex) Free and Clear when I was pregnant with DD because I didn't want to "miss" something of her's that got mixed in with our laundry and for her to have a reaction.

Re: spin off on washing clothes...

  • We'll just use our regular detergent Tide.

I did the same, and haven't switched back.  Occasionally I get Seventh Generation lavender scent if I have a coupon or something, but for the most part, we're a free and clear family.

Dreft smells delightful, though.  We had Dreft stain spray and I love the smell.

  • I've always washed our daughter's clothes in our regular detergent right along with our clothes. I'll do the same this time unless I have a reason to change.
  • We use Kirkland Free and Clear.

  • We typically use Seventh Generation but I'm thinking of trying the Mrs. Meyers baby because it smells great but is supposed to be gentle
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I am using some gentle baby detergent right now but once that runs out I am going to make a batch of detergent myself. We can use that for the whole family and it's super cheap.

  • We use whatever free and clear is cheapest when I go shopping anyway, so all of LO's clothes got washed in that as well.

I guess we've gotten so used to free and clear that it makes sensitivities more apparent, but my mom uses a scented detergent and fabric softener and DH also gets a rash when we wash clothes at her house. She washed all my hand me down onesies, and even though I washed them again, they still smell strongly of her detergent. That stuff really sticks!

So glad you brought up this topic. Forgive the book in advance, but hopefully someone can relate?? I struggled with this topic for weeks before making my final decision. We are cloth diapering and one of the most highly recommended store bought detergents is Tide Original powder specifically. No idea why this specific formula scores so highly or cleans diapers so well, I just know that has been the concenus among many in that community. Apparently Tide Free & Clear (which was my original plan) doesn't clean the diapers nearly as well and isn't recommended. So I was initially just going to use Tide free and clear detergent for everyone's clothes and just have a small box of Tide original for diaper use only. Then it dawned on me that washing the diapers in Tide original powder is already exposing LOs skin to what is in regular Tide and if he is going to have a reaction, I will see it right away and have to scrap my cloth diaper was routine anyway. So the plan has become this: Everyone's clothes, sheets, diapers, blankets, whatever else will be washed in Tide Original Power on a trial basis and if LO has a reaction to it, I will just have to find another product that works well to clean diapers and that I can use universally for everyone. It doesn't make sense for LO to have his own detergent that is only used on his stuff bc if he has sensitive skin and is going to be cuddling up on me and daddy and our clothes/sheets/etc...and our clothes are just washed with regular detergent, he will have a reaction anyway. Anyone else dealing with this??
I am not CDing but wondering if you could wash the diapers twice? Once to get the stains out then with the free and clean detergent?  Can't relate but thought this could be an option?

  • Using Dreft.  For now DH and I are using Tide with Febreeze. We will likely switch but I love the soap we use now,so using that up before LO comes.  I will also use Norwex powder soaps as an option.

  • Diapers are in Tide Original and all other clothes are Purex/All Free and Clear. DH and I have sensitive skin so we have always used this and it works for all of us.

Absolutely in love with our 'big' family!

I'm also a proud Auntie to a crazy little girl, her brand new baby sister, a little man on his way in the next month, and a sweet little mister we will miss forever!!!
  • My grandma bought me a bottle of Dreft so I'll use that up. I also have a coupon for a bottle of Dreft so perhaps I'll buy another, and after that just go with the Free & Clear stuff because Dreft is so pricey.
  • Dreft is not worth the extra money. Free and clear is just fine.

  • We'll be using Legacy of Clean delicate (pretty much like Dreft). I wouldn't want to risk baby having a sensitive skin. We'll probably switch back to regular once she's about 6 months old.

  • I switched all of us over to Dreft when I had DS.  I tried many other types/brands, but all of them broke him out in a small rash everywhere.  I even had to change my body lotion over to his baby lotion to keep his skin clear.  Poor kid has sensitive skin.

  • For everything but cloth diapers, Liquid Tide Free and Clear (what we already use).  For Cloth Diapers, powdered regular Tide (as liquid detergent can build up more and reduce the absorbency of the diapers).

  • I've been using the Arm and Hammer for "sensitive skin". It's lightly scented, so I'm not sure how gentle it is, but it does a good job getting the clothes clean. We'll be sticking with it unless LO has a reaction. I'm more concerned about our fabric softener at this point, but use it pretty sparingly anyway. Has anyone tried using vinegar as a fabric softener? Does it work? Does it make your clothes smell like vinegar?

  • I got a few bottles of babyganics detergent when it was buy one free a little while ago. It seems to go on sale often so if I like it I will probably stick with it and always stock up when it is on sale.

    Anniversary

  • I bought generic dreft  but when that runs out I will be switching to a "free and clear".

  • OK is there a reason for the Tide Free and Clear? Like I have Arm & Hammer extra sensitive that's free of scents and dyes. Is that not ok?

Nah, not that I know of. I use All free and clear if it's cheaper.

  • We use Honest Company, but I get the bundle so it's a lot cheaper than if you buy it in the store.

  • We will just use our normal detergent. I recently started making my own and love it. I have never used different detergents for my kids. Their skin hasn't ever been irritated by laundry detergent.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Is it true you don't want to use dryer sheets or even those dryer ball things on baby clothes? Something about it not being good for the flame retardant in the clothes (yet another thing I didn't even know about!)?

Do any of you just toss the clothes in the dryer by themselves? Do they stay soft regardless?
  • We use ALL Free and Clear and always have. DS and I have really bad reactions to anything with dyes or perfumes in it. I've seen babies break out in a rash while being help by people who use strong detergent so it's easiest just to have the whole family use the same soap.

we are going to try cloth diapers, and I have been prepping them with just hot water.  However, I bought some Country Save detergent at Sprouts because it came highly recommended for cloth diaper use.  I will try that for a while and see...if it doesn't get them clean enough, then we'll try the TIDE route.  I had a tendency towards yeast infections a while back and switched to non-scented detergents and I am not willing to change that for me, so I will probably be having to use different detergents for baby and for me and my h.
