Elective Ultrasounds?

Who's had an elective ultrasound? Thoughts and opinions on whether it was worth it for you!

We have one on Saturday to find out gender and see the baby in 3d/4d (we won't have anatomy scan till 21 weeks- I'm 16 now!) so was just wondering what everyone who has had one in the past thought of them! Ours is $99 dollars and includes 4 color pictures, 4 black and white and access to their live stream for family members!

Hope your having a lovely Thursday!

Re: Elective Ultrasounds?

  • I've never had one done with my previous two and won't with this one either. The one here won't do it until you are 18 weeks and had your anatomy scan done already with your dr so I just don't see the point in paying for it when I already get to know the sex and see our baby ahead of time for free. (I live in canada of course).

I do have friends that have done it though. They liked it. I guess to each their own. I'm not a fan of the 3d/4D pics anyways.

  • I've not had one but I did see my baby in 3D at 18 weeks and 32 weeks with my son (at peri). Having seen that I might pay for one at 32 weeks but wouldn't at 18 - it kinda freaked me out at the earlier one! Not very pretty! :)
  • We did one at 15 weeks. Only chose to do 2D since I will have many more 2D/3D scans because of twins. The tech was able to tell the genders and was VERY positive it was 2 girls. (I'm still a little skeptical) but I guess the A/S in a few weeks will confirm. I think it's worth it if you want to find out sooner than 20 weeks. Also my OB let me know that my A/S would be 2-2.5 hours because of two. We chose to do the elective U/S to have family join us so they don't have to wait that long at the A/S. Oh and I'm a huge planner so it's nice to know and start planning. Good luck!
  • We will do one but between 24-28 as this is recommended for the pictures. We debated going for the sex earlier but it didn't make sense to go twice and we only have to wait two more weeks.

  • I think they are a waste of money.  They are not the type of pictures you hang on the wall and I just do not see the point.  The u/s pictures they let you take home from the anatomy scan are plenty enough for the baby book.  I would rather put the money towards newborn photos or an updated family photo once baby is born.

  • We had one done at 14 weeks (last week) for $50. we got like 12 pics including 3d shots, a Similac gift bag to include two canisters of formula and other cool stuff and two scratch off reveal cards. I'd say totally worth it for the price and experience!

  • Our office offers the 3D, but I think they look creepy! I'd rather just have a normal ultrasound. For instance, I don't have another ultrasound for 7 weeks, and really would like to see the baby again, just because I like seeing it. I thought about begging.
  • My midwife offers elective regular ultrasounds for $50. We had one with our DD because we were heading home for Christmas and wanted to be able to announce in person to our families.
It was great! I just scheduled ours for Sept 3 this time around. We are having a hell of a time with baby names and I think knowing the sex will help us out at least a little bit.
