Is there a chart to show where it how ranks on the mercury listing?  I would be curious to see where it sits on the listing so that I don't accidently swap it out for something that (unknowingly) would be higher.

  • My question is what sort of medical credentials are behind the people at Consumer reports vs.  the FDA, or even my own physician?

I love me some tuna, and salmon. Thinking of salmon for tonight, and I was *this* close to having tuna salad last night.

  • There are a couple other articles about this.  I'm not buying it, consumer reports can just F off and leave my tuna alone.

  • I feel like there is just WAAYYY too much that is apparently "not safe". I'm over it.
  • Does that mean I shouldn't eat sushi, either? I just hate sushi last week.

@lionyloo32‌ don't you know, everything is dangerous for pregnant women?
Yep. It reminds me of this article where the author talks about how being pregnant felt like being child, with all the "rules" and guidelines, many of which simply lack evidence and support.

It brings back memories of when I get asked by medical professionals if I clean my cats' litter boxes, because, ya know, I could contract toxoplasmosis. But wait, do they not know that women who garden are more at risk, and that one can only contract it if the parasite is ingested. So, if you garden, wear gloves, and follow basic hygiene practices. And as for cats, it can only be ingested if the cat is infected, but only cats who come into contact with infected prey can contract it. So, that means indoor cats can't contract the parasite given they're not in an environment to hunt birds and other small prey.

Someone can also contract it from consuming raw meat. So it's definitely good to avoid eating raw meat. :P

  • I love tuna so I've been following this a lot...the reason the guidelines have changed is that when they do these random tests, the levels of mercury have always been significantly higher in tuna/canned tuna than they expected. I don't know if it's the type being caught, or where they are swimming/being raised, but years ago it was tuna once a week, then they changed it to 2x a month and so on. Like everything else, moderation is fine.

Doctors haven't caught on yet because they're probably getting bribes from Big Tuna ;-)

  • Yea I started this whole pregnancy thing saying, "I'm not going to eat or drink a single bad thing for my baby!" And I cut out alcohol and caffeine even when we were trying to conceive. Then after getting pregnant and actually trying to look up a list of the 'bad' foods to eat, I realized that I would quickly starve if I abided by every claim. So I researched the hell out of the foods I love (sushi forever!), and I basically eat what I want. Baby is kicking the crap out of me and seems to be doing fine :)
