Anyone taking Meds for GD?

Dr wants to start me on meds for GD because I've had a couple of high readings, although not that high... however I'm scared of meds during pregnancy. Thinking of asking Dr if I can try more exercise first ( since I'm really not doing too much as my job is pretty active). Thoughts?

Re: Anyone taking Meds for GD?

  • I am on insulin for GD. he might go for more exercise, but I know it's all hormonal so there will come a point that it's out of your control. He may start you on metformin before insulin. Mine weren't that high in te beginning, but I told the nurse the likely hood of me throwing up that huge pill meant I probably wouldn't consistently take it. I was insulin last pregnancy too.

  • Ask about metformin. It is a class B drug. The side effects are brutal unless you take the extended release. Those were tolerable. I have PCOS so I took it for many years until I was longer considered diabetic. I had terrible mornin sickness in the beginning so I knew if I couldn't get the huge pill down I wouldn't take it, that's why I went straight to insulin.

I took gly-buride as well.  I know you don't like meds, but high blood sugar during pg is more dangerous to your baby than the pills.  For GD, you can't control it as easily with diet and excersize as you can with other types of diabetes, especially since just going low-carb is not an option for babies.  Remember that your doc weighed the risks vs the benefits.  If you read up on GD, you'll see that your body still makes enough insulin, but the hormones produced by the placenta (or 2!!) make your body more resistant to the insulin.  Gly-buride and metformin both work by making more efficient use of the insulin your body is producing.  I'd take the meds again, but don't go more than 3 hrs without a snack while on it or your sugar will drop and you'll go hypoglycemic.  Also see a nutritionist if available.  Again, the diet for GD is much, much different than regular type 1 or 2 diabetes.

Also forgot to add: for your babies, your blood sugar goals are a much narrower window than for non-pg women.  What seems not that high to us is outside of a healthy range for developing babies.

  • I took the same meds as everyone else. I could control it with watching what I ate but I could not get enough calories to help my babies grow and exercise was not on table for me as I went on bedrest.
