Cloth Diapering

O/N solution for an AIO user?

I know this question gets asked a lot, but I couldn't find something specific to my situation by searching the boards.

DD is 13 months old and has rarely leaked through her diapers overnight until now.  We use the BG AOI's exclusively, and they have worked spectacularly.  For O/N we add either a microfiber or hemp insert to the diaper, and that has worked well until now.  The last few mornings, she has woken up soaking wet.  Like, literally dripping, and the diaper weighs a ton (it isn't any better with the hemp).

I guess she is turning into a heavy nighttime wetter now, and I need some help.  Can someone please recommend something like an AIO to try, or something with the convenience like that?  Does something like that even exist or am I dreaming?  Also, if it makes a difference...DD is a skinny thing at around 18 pounds.  I don't think the fit is off because we've been using the same diapers all along and there are no gaps.  It just seems like she is peeing one too many times for that diaper, if that makes sense.  Oh, and she's a tummy sleeper, which I'm sure doesn't help the situation.  Your help is appreciated!

  • I'd go with a a good fitted and cover.  It's two pieces, but very simple.  And most OS fitteds have snaps.  All you have to do is snap on the fitted and add a cover.  It's supper simple.

Just make sure to get a larger cover. (BlueBerry Coveralls, Nicki's, Etc.)

  • ^wss.  LO is probably starting to hold it a bit overnight, and peeing all at once.  You aren't going to find an AIO that will keep up.  Bite the bullet and get some fitteds and covers.  You can get a fitted that snaps on exactly like an aio does (we use goodmamas) and you can get a cover that goes on easily.  So it's 2 diapers basically, but it's simple.  Just make sure all of the cover covers all of the fitted.
Also, which AIO are you using, and where are you adding the insert?

  • Which BG AIO are you using? Freetime or elemental?

Our ON diaper is the new style BG elemental with a flip daytime organic insert. Or a hemp insert tucked under the cotton layers. We've even used the flip ON insert in it without gaping issues.

  • You aren't going to be able to find an AIO that will work, because there would be so much absorbency it would never dry when you wash it.

You could try to just keep adding hemp inserts until it causes poor fit/gaps, but you are better off looking into some good fitteds.

  • If you're really set on sticking with an AIO, you may get lucky with some Geffen baby super absorbers plus, folded in half and placed at the front of the diaper. Their hemp is superior in terms of absorption IMO. That being said, fitteds and covers are easy and more reliable for ON.

I use the BG Freetimes, and put the insert on the bottom, then fold the flaps over top of it.  So the pee will see the 2 flaps, then the insert, then the back of the diaper.  I hope that makes sense!

We are using Freetimes.  The new ones sound cool! I wonder if they would be more absorbent?

  • I recently got two Nikki's bamboo aio. They are super absorbant and I fell like you may be able to add a inset to them. The whole inside is covered in bamboo so in my mind it is similar to a fitted. I've never tried it. But if you like AIOs you might like the diaper for day even if it dosent work for nights.

  • I'm only answering this because my DD is also a long skinny stomach sleeper and I also started to have leaking issues at 8 months. I don't use an AIO but I had recently bought a couple gdiapers to try. They are really working for us. I know they aren't AIO and a lot of people don't like them, but once you get the hang of them it's really not hard. I get the ON diaper ready in advance so when it's time for bed I just grab it and stick it on. I use 2 cloth inserts with the hemp sides facing each other on the inside. I think it's the really good seal on the liner insert that is helping prevent leaks. You might give it a try if you're open to a different system.
Me:41, DH:41 Positive for MTHFR mutations- one copy C677T, one copy A1298C. One daughter born on Thanksgiving in 2013. Six losses.
  • OP, quoting isn't working.

But IMO natural fibers absorb better than the microfiber (that's in the freetimes) so that's what makes the Elementals work for me or fitteds work for others.

We haven't branched into fitteds because we found a solution that worked with what we already had. But for the price of an elemental you may be able to get a nice fitted.

  • Thanks everyone! I may try a few of your suggestions and see what works best. Thank you again!!

  • For those of you who use fitted pre folds etc.

How do you keep a stay dry feel? Since cotton absorbs but doesn't wick.

You don't really need a "stay dry" feel. It's all personal preference I suppose. But my guy has never been bothered with cotton next to his skin.

If your kid is sensitive to wetness, a cheap solution is to cut up some microfleece and lay on top of the diaper.

Ahhh okay. I always thought the wetness against their skin wasn't good, which is why I went to pockets from flat for nighttime. I think someone told me they went to spoises because the fabric couldn't be wet against their skin.

He's never shown any reaction to wetness so I can assume he would be fine.
