Breastfeeding

Bottle nipples

About 2 months ago my daughter started refusing her bottles at daycare. At the time we were using comotomo bottles with slow flow nipples. The daycare director asked me to try a medium flow nipple. I reluctantly tried the faster nipples and DD started taking her bottles better. About 2-3 weeks after switching, she went on a nursing strike. I switched her bottles back to slow flow and after a couple bottle feedings, she went back to nursing. Today, I got a note from her teacher saying DD seems frustrated with her bottles and asked again about a faster nipple. I'm afraid of switching and then having DD refuse to nurse again. We recently introduced a sippy cup with water, so I don't know if that's why she's frustrated with the bottles. I also think she's getting a tooth, because she's been fussy in general. DD is 8 months old and I plan to breastfeed for at least 12 months. I don't want to do anything that would encourage her to wean. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Bottle nipples

  • Can you just send a sippy cup with breastmilk instead?

  • @mshukh‌ do you know if sippy cups can cause a baby to refuse to nurse too? I thought about using a sippy, but was afraid that might cause more issues with nursing. DD is used to having her milk warm and I'm not sure if the sippy cup cam get warmed up in the bottle warmer at daycare. @casey78‌ sometimes I feel DD is the only breastfeed baby they have ever had at daycare. When DD first started daycare, she went through a growth spurt and was constantly hungry. The teacher sent me a note asking for 5 5oz bottles for an 8.5 hour day!
  • @Jmj070211 I skipped the sippy and introduced a straw cup right around 7 months of age. He took to it very quickly. There are descriptions online how to get a baby to understand how to suck through a straw. We practiced with water a lot at first since a lot would get spilled initially. It did not at all affect my LO's behavior at the breast. Still bf'ing at 14+ months. I would *assume* that it would be the same with a sippy cup. And generally this far in (8 months), I think the risk is much lower. Also, see if your LO will take colder milk in a sippy / straw cup. It's a good idea to get them used to different temperature right away (you can't always warm up milk). I think the novelty of the straw cup made my LO very excited to drink milk out of the straw cup no matter the temperature.

  • I explained to the DC teacher this morning that last time we switched to medium flow nipples DD started refusing to nurse. The teacher seemed understanding and willing to keep trying the slow flow. She said, "I didn't breastfeed my daughter so I don't have any experience with this. I don't even know how long babies are supposed to breastfeed." She said DD sometimes takes 45 min to drink 4 oz and often gets bored and pushes the bottle away. She does the same thing while nursing and I just offer it again after she plays for a while. The teacher said she can't always take that much time to feed one baby, because she's usually the only adult in the room. I said that we would work on mastering the sippy cup and then she can try the breast milk fin the sippy, right now a lot of the water drops down her face and I don't want to waste my milk by putting it in the sippy cup.
