What are your thoughts on masculine middle names for girls?

edited August 2014 in Baby Names
I know masculine first names are a no no lol but what about a classic girls name with a classic boys name? Here are a few I have met over the years

Olivia Ryan

Lillian Scott^sisters

Mary Michael(was Michael Mary at first--thank god she changed it)

  • I think anything goes for middle names.

I will say that I have a soft spot for Ryan as a girl's first name.

  • I sort of like for it to have meaning when you put a boy name on a girl but like PP mentioned anything goes in the middle. It would just be nice when people ask her why she has a boy middle name, she can say it was her -insert family member-'s name instead of that her parents just wanted her to have a boy middle name.

  • Anything goes for middle name camp. It still needs to flow well with the rest though.

  • It's fine.  I really do like the Mary FamilyorBoyName trend.  Mary John or Mary Michael or Mary Pell.  I realize it's super old school, but I adore it.

  • I like it when it's a family name (either FN or surname). Ryan, Scott, and Grayson can be surnames.

Then again, DD has a masculine MN because it's a family name on DH's side. It also happens to flow nicely with the rest of her name.

  • My general thought is middle names are good for contrasts or honoring family members... So if you pick a fancy fn, the middle name should be simple (Penelope Ann) and vice versa... simple fn, fancy mn (John Finnegan).

MN's are a great place to honor loved ones. My middle name was part of my grandmother's name and I will probably use my mom's mn. My only concerns are if it's too masculine people may think it's two last names, but I also don't necessarily see any harm in that actually or she could end up hating it. (I would be upset if my middle name was Albert!!)

I guess if the flow works and it's an important name then go for it... but I personally wouldn't just randomly pick a boys name for the heck of it.

  • I don't mind it if it's there to honor a relative.  But just throwing a random masculine name in there strikes me as odd.  "Why is your middle name Tom?"  "I have no idea.  My parents just thought it sounded nice with Roberta."

  • I don't like it. I think it make sense if Ryan or Scott was Mommy's mainden name.  I think that is what people will assume.  Then when they say, "Oh, your mom's maiden name?" Your child will have to be like..."No, but that would make sense."

Middle names a freebie, since people hardly ever use them.  I say it's fine to use a masculine middle name for a girl if it's a family name or a name to honor someone.  I'd side eye it if it's just a random masculine name since there are plenty of nice girl's names and random masculine names on girls send the message that there is something wrong with femininity.

  • I have a Marnie Raye (Ray was my Papa's middle name and he was my hero and Adeline Blake ( hubby picked Blake and I loved the flow)
  • I think anything goes for MNs but I prefer gender specific names.
  • I don't like it, especially if there's no reason for it.

  • I think pretty much anything goes for MNs, but since I like my kids' MNs to have meaning, I would only use a masculine MN for a girl if it was a family name.

  • Agree with others that the middle name is open to anything. I much prefer a male name with meaning than just some filler girls name. I'd rather meet an Ava Ryan and ANOTHER Ava Grace lol

I am not crazy about it. While I like honoring family in a name I would personally choose a feminine version of the name or honor a female family member instead. I have seen a few threads now of people wanting to choose a masculine middle name for a girl to honor a male family member but I haven't seen one of someone wanting to choose a feminine middle name on their boy to honor a female family member (not a woman's maiden name but a woman's fn). To me, if the door doesn't swing both ways it's a no go.
