Cloth Diapering

Smash Cake Advice?

I need advice as to how I should approach Elliot's smash cake photos. We're having them done next weekend, the 19th. I want him naked, except for a cloth diaper, in the photo. But I'm concerned about the icing. He will probably wear a fuzzibunz because we have a million of them, and my favorite color on him is one of those. Should I be worried that the icing might stain? What about effecting the PUL? What else should I think about as we go into this?

Think about if you want a crown or hat. My daughter had a crown with a 1 on it. She was so busy with the cake she forgot about her crown.

I didn't have any problems with my Thirsties cover.

Just watch out for the diapers after. My daughters stomach was not ready for the sugar over load.

I also went with white frosting with purple accents.

You'll want to hose him off after.

  • We had DS in a goodmama fit tied so PUL wasn't an issue, but I can't imagine it would be an issue. He also didn't get as into the cake as I imagined so a big mess didn't really happen. The little bit if frosting that did get on the diaper washed out.

Stay away from red cake/icing and brown cake/icing.

And it should wash out fine :)

  • Really?  I know this board is all about cloth diaper love but those pictures will be so cute and the process will be such a fun memory that you won't care if you ruin a diaper.  And that's coming from garage sale shopping, cheapskate mom!  Pick your favorite diaper and let it get destroyed if you want colored frosting.  Won't you smile every time you see those stains?

I want to do white cake and wild colored frosting, maybe blue or hot pink but I'm going with a black diaper and a black bow tie that velcros around the neck, no shirt.  I assume the diaper will survive but planning to sacrifice the cute bow tie if necessary.

  • Also if you ruin the diaper it's a great excuse to buy another one!

  • I just did DS's cake smash today.  His party theme is Finding Nemo so I had light blue icing and he wore a blue BG 4.0 diaper.  The icing wiped right off, I used Wilton's white icing with Wilton's sky blue food dye.  Here are a few images:

  • Gismo those are SO CUTE!!! I'm glad it wiped right off, that puts my heart at ease. We're doing a balloon theme, and my colors are sky, navy, orange, and lime. Our cake is going to be light blue to, so that seriously makes me worry a lot less!

I love love love the distressed floor in these photos!

I stole it off pinterest lol
  • Dd's smash cake had pink and purple icing. I just put her in a BG 4.0 in Dazzle and nothing stained :-)

I say just be careful with your color selection (obviously no white diapers or anything!), and if you do notice something on it, oxyclean is amazing stuff!

  • We are thinking about doing a rainbow cake- with the actual cake being rainbow colors. Then I'm going to do a thin layer of white icing between each layer. And just a bit of icing at the top. I'm hoping nothing will get stained too much with the white, and the cake will just brush off.

That's what I was thinking about doing too! Don't overmix your batter. Last time I did a multi dyed cake... Camouflage... I over mixed and it got a little gummy.

  • I am opposed to smash cakes because I think they're wasteful. Definitely seems like an unpopular opinion, though. I'd love to hear your thoughts, if you have time to leave me a comment on my article, please do. I never mind healthy disagreement.

If you're going to leave spam on a year old thread, at least put the link. Thanks for the memories.
Which reminds me, my son's birthday is coming up in 3 months.

Someone want to plan a party for me?  I hate planning parties.
