I stopped by one of those frozen yogurt places today to surprise DS. It's self serve for both the froyo and the toppings. When I paid with credit card, the slip had a spot for tips. Thought that was weird, but would have brushed it off except there was also a giant rooster with a tip jar on the counter. The sign read "rooster only eats cash!! Don't let him starve!". Am I off base, or would you be put off for just blatant requests for tips at a self serve place?
Also, after I got DS all excited for his treat, he took one look and said "I want French fries!".

Wait, what's the difference? It's a waiter's job to bring you food and we tip for that. I'm not seeing your distinction between job and service.
Anyway, I don't think it's necessary to tip at a fro-yo place, but it's part of the food service industry where tipping is par for the course. I really don't see an issue with a tip jar.
In most cases, servers don't make minimum wage. I'd be willing to be they do at the froyo place. I'm a hostess and I do to go orders and there is a line for tips, but I do make minimum wage. It's just the way the machines are set up.

I guess I don't see a waiter's job as just bringing me food. I tip on the experience - refilling drinks, recommending food, making sure the food comes out correctly, etc. I don't feel like the fro-yo place employees are enhancing my dining experience. I enhance it all by myself with gobs of melted PB sauce.
