August 2012 Moms

bedtimes/ nap routines

Hello everyone! I hope y'all are doing well, and happy birthday to all of the august '12 babies. Anyways, I have a question for everyone. DH and myself have been off this summer (we are both teachers), which is great because we get to spend a lot of time with lucas. However with school starting up we are starting to question the sleeping routine he has gotten into. He has been going to bed around 8-9:30 and sleeping till 500-700 am. He will also take a nap for about an hour and a half in the afternoon. What is everyone else's birthday kids doing?

Thanks!

Re: bedtimes/ nap routines

  • Jeffrey goes to bed at 7pm and usually wakes up around 6:20am, with an hour/ sometimes an hour and a half nap during the day. Not planning to change the routine - it works well for us!

  • DD goes to bed around 8:30pm and wakes up around 7:30am. Then she is normally down for a nap around 1:30pm which lasts mostly 2 hours.

Our routines are pretty regimented because of having 2u2 (until last week anyway). DD gets a bath around 7:30, then books each night and goes to sleep around 8 or 8:15. She wakes up between 6:30 and 7 am, and naps from about 1 to 3 or so. Our daycare provider got DS napping in the afternoon at the same time everyday and it is is absolutely amazing for DH and I to have 2 hours each weekend afternoon to relax or get things done :)

  • i know i have an outlier here- DS is a crazy night owl. he usually goes to bed when we do, between 10-11, and gets up at 8 AM. he naps for 2 hours at daycare and generally still naps for 2 hours on the weekend.

i go in to work late (10 AM) and get home late (6:30-7) and DH has a flexible schedule, so DS has always put himself on this late-to-bed-late-to-wake schedule. it's mostly okay with us (except the part about having almost no alone time) and DS is as stubborn as heck so we haven't made a real push to change it.

and yes, we've tried putting him to bed earlier at all different times between 8 and 10 and it just does not work. i know we could also cut his nap or ask them to cut his nap at daycare but it seems like that's asking for trouble.

DS goes to bed between 7 and 7:30 and we wake him up around 6am during the week, on the weekends, he might sleep until 7.  He goes down for a nap between 12 and 1, depending where he is, and will sleep anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours.

  • DD goes to bed between 8-830. Wakes up 530-6am and I get her out of bed at 615. 1.5-2hr nap in the afternoons usually starting at 1pm.

Wish my kid slept more than 10hrs a night but she's never been interested in that!

  • During the week he goes to bed between 8-8:30 unless something special is going on.  I wake him around 6:45-7am for work/school.  He naps about 11:30-1:30 at daycare.

On the weekends he goes to bed around the same time and wakes up anywhere from 8:30-10am.  He usually takes a nap about 4.5 hrs after he wakes up and it could be 2 hrs or 4 hrs.  I'd say 2.5 hrs is the norm.
  • He goes down at 7:30 and is usually up right at 6:30 (with a swing of 30 min). He naps at 11:30 for usually 3 hours, but sometimes only 2.

  • Caroline goes to bed between 8-9 and sleeps until 8-830. She naps around 1230 for roughly 2-3 hours.

  • If there is no nap than she's asleep around 7/7:30 waking up between 6:30/7:30. School is starting up (for DD1) so I'll have to get her up by 7:20.
If she takes a nap she won't go to bed until 9.
Part of our problems with naps is that she gets tired around 2 but that's when we have school pick up. I think that's why she dropped a lot of her naps to begin with and just carried over to the summer time.

  • We've been a little loosey-goosey this summer (and even before) due to me just not having it all together, but typically DD goes to bed about 8-8:30. I don't know when she actually wakes up in the morning because she just lies in her bed without making a peep. I get her up anywhere between 7:45 (daycare mornings) and 9:00+. She naps at 2:00, typically for 2-3 hrs.

Both kids are starting preschool next week so I'm planning to standardize bedtime to 8 pm, wake up at 8, and nap from 2-4 or 4:30.
