Baby Carriers

Ok - I was just on a FB group and was told to change the type of carrier I use (myself and other mommys). Apparently not all carriers are ergonomically correct for your LO regardless if facing out or in? Sigh...another expensive item to buy?! Really?! I have the Infantino Flip Front or Back Carrier (a registry gift item) and was told to get the Ergo360 ($160). Can someone give me reliable evidence that using the Infantino will harm my LO. I use the carrier quite a bit when it's just the 2 of us out walking. His father just chooses to carry him in his arms. BTW - if there's anyone on this Board also on the FB group please don't be offended. I just want a 2nd opinion of sorts. Thanks ladies!!

Re: Baby Carriers

  • I'm sure someone else will chime in with more information, but the potential for hip issues is very real with "crotch dangler" carriers. Not sure if the infantino is one, but the Bjorn is. Facing out is particularly not recommended. Basically you want a carrier that supports their legs to the knees. Ergo, Beco, Tula...all options.

If you use the carrier a lot, probably worth getting one that is better for him (and you! I had a Bjorn before I learned this and OMG are the Beco and ergo easier on me).

    Agree with pps.

Another option to save a little $ is consignment. I got a beco for 1/3 the cost that way.

I got my Ergo in excellent condition for half price that way. A resale group on FB that I'm in has one up for $70 :)

Periodically the Ergo is on sale at BRU and Amazon.  That's what I have.  I had a Bjorn with DD1 before I knew anything about carriers and remember it being killer on my back.

    And shoulders!

  • The infantino is bad for the hips too I'm afraid. Go with an ergo if that was on your registry. The only thing infantino makes well is the mei tai.

Also forward facing in any carrier is bad for both baby and mama's back so it's really discouraged.

I put ds on my back in my ergo and he likes that. I only do it when dh is home though to help me keep an eye on him as you really shouldn't do it til 6 months but we make sure his head is secure.

Other great options are the beco manduca tula etc as a buckle carrier.

I want to.love a ring sling but it hurts my back.
  • we have a lillebaby, very similar to the ergo and I like it a lot. It's very comfy and is not a crotch dangler. Now if only I could get LO to share my enthusiasm for babywearing
  • Infantino makes a carrier called a mei tai that has a wide base and provides correct positioning. They sell for about $30
  • Yeah ergonomic carriers are best, it was hard to justify the price tag but they are SO much more comfortable for both you and LO. The support should go from knee to knee.
    @Kaylee524 that is brilliant!!
I love my lillebaby bc it has head support and a hood where the ergo only has a hood. I also love my K'tan bc it's easy to put on. Just place the outer wrap low against your hips for better back support. I've def seen lots of secondhand ergos on CL and for sale at REI and Nordstrom's. GL!

  • Also there is a babywearing on a budget Facebook page with lots of options :-)

Or if you have a babywearing group near you, you may be able to try out multiple carriers, get some advice and many have a lending library that allows you to check carriers out!

I'm so glad I found this post! I honestly had no idea!!! I have a sling, Bjorne, and a Mei tei. Guess I will be using the sling and Mei tei more now! Just have to figure out a better way to use the sling to support her legs.
  • We love our Ergo! Well worth the splurge
  • My DD cries unless I face her forward in a cheap carrier from WalMart. Hates the $100 Ergo from Target that is more comfortable for me and better for her. Forward facing or plain old carrying. Those are my only options at this point.
