First trimester screening

We went to our first trimester screening today, and our results weren't what we were hoping. There was a little extra fluid behind the baby's neck. Ours measured 3.7 mm, and the doctor said a normal range was below 2.4. He sent me for blood work and wants me to come in monthly for ultrasounds. He said it could mean nothing, or this fluid could be an indicator of Down's syndrome, a heart defect, or something else. Has anyone else had extra fluid and had perfectly healthy babies with no defects or abnormalities? I won't know the results of the blood test until next Wednesday, so I'm stressing myself out with worry!

Re: First trimester screening

  • Try not to stress. I have no personal experience with this but have friends that have and everything turned out fine.

  • I am having mine tomorrow and have been a bit worried about it.

Is the blood test they're doing one of yhe panorama or harmony ones? We aren't covered for that, but I was curious if insurance would help cover it if the NT test comes back with higher numbers?
  • NT test and 12 wk US for me tomorrow too.  Prayers for all of us!  But yes high rate of false positives.

  • The doctor was going to do just a regular first trimester screening blood work but when the fluid was more than normal, he ordered a new test. I'm not exactly sure of the name. I was holdings back tears as he was trying to explain, but what he did say was that this blood work is about 99% accurate for detecting abnormalities rather than 90% with the first trimester screening. It's going to take longer to process at a specific lab, so I guess it's good that it's being looked at with such detail. I read a lot about it and it sounds like normally everything is ok. Fingers are crossed, and I'll be praying extra hard tonight!

  • I have a friend who experienced this and her son is 100% fine.
Sorry you're going through this. Prayers being sent your way.
  • No experience, but sending thoughts and prayers your way.
  • No personal experience but I haw heard of people having these results and the baby turning out 100% healthy. Keeping FX for you.
  • Thoughts and prayers!
  • T&P to you. Just try not to freak yourself out too bad. The test can only say that your baby may have Down Syndrome, a heart defect, etc. You won't know for sure until you either have further testing or until the baby is born. Try to enjoy the experience and not stress over what may end up being nothing.
  • There are lots of false positives. I'm trying to decide now if I want to even take this test. I don't want to stress over nothing. Hope all works out for you.
  • Hmm I dont have any experience with this, im actually going in for my first tri screen on thursday. I just keep reminding my self it is a screen and not a diagnosis. Good luck and keep us posted
  • Called back with the blood work, and they said everything looks normal! Just have to go for monthly ultrasounds to keep an eye on it! Such a relief! Thanks for all the good thoughts!
  • So glad it is looking alright!
  • I have an OB Nurse assigned to me through my insurance company and talked to her for about an hour just on the First Trimester Screening test. She said there is a very, very high rate of fake positives and even a high rate of false negatives. She said even with higher then normal fluid levels a lot of babies somehow work it out inside the womb and the levels turn out very normal when they are born.

Personally I wasn't going to have the test at all because of the high rates of false positives but I was just told past week I have a SCH. Because of this I'm actually going for the test mainly to see if my SCH is clearing up versus the Downs screening part. This was the advice from my OB and my Nurse.
  • Whoop false positives not fake :)
