Anyone else have, um, piercings?

Of the nipple variety and plan to breastfeed? If so, did you keep the jewelry out throughout the time you breastfed or only during feedings? I'm not sure what I'm going to do. If she's a frequent nurser like my others then taking them out and putting them back in would get tedious, and I'm sure they'd become pretty irritated and sensitive from all the "handling."

I'm hoping the holes don't close, because I'm not so sure I'd want to get them re-pierced. Eek.

Re: Anyone else have, um, piercings?

  • I would talk with you doctor about infection risk if you plan to take out and reinsert every time.

  • I had mine pierced and ended up taking them out because pregnancy didn't gel with them. They were getting infected anyway. :( It made me sad, but I just didn't think it would be worth it to take them in and out for every single feeding!

  • I had mine pierced as well and as soon as the milk started leaking from the piercing I got freaked out lol so I took them out ASAP and I haven't put them back in so they did close up and I do miss them thinking about getting them redone after the delivery hope this helps
  • I have a hood piercing and my OB recommended taking it out while I could still see it. And before things might swell and make it difficult. (Wrong kind you asked about, but may help someone else)

  • I had them pierced for years pre-DS but took them out well before I was pregnant. I leaked from them the entire 7 months I breastfed. It sucked bigtime!

I have my hood pierced with no intentions on removing it. It has never come up.

I doubt I'll want to bother with removing them before each feeding, so I'll likely just remove them and see about re-piercing once I'm done nursing.

Did it take some time for the holes to close? I've read and heard it differs a lot for each person, and if they've been pierced for years they may not fully close.

  • @aeonlux my old co-worker had no intentions of taking hers out but the doctor gave her the option during labor of her boyfriend taking it out or he could cut it. So I asked my OB with that paranoia and just opted to do it now.

  • I got mine pierced 10 years ago and took them out a few months ago because all of the sudden one was starting to reject.  Mine didn't like being changed frequently and I can't imagine taking out/putting back in after each bf session. Even after having mine out for such a short time they are pretty well closed up.  I would like to get them redone after bfing is done.

I also had a hood piercing and removed it when I had my TAC surgery bc no jewelery is allowed.  I didn't end up putting it back in either but plan to once baby is here.  It's a great one ;)

I had a hood piercing, and due to having csections I took it out while I could still do it myself, lol! I never put it back after baby #2 because it kind of freaked out my H.

My sister has vertical and horizontal nipple piercings in both nips, she had them for 3 years before her baby was born. She took them out and left them out for breastfeeding and once he was weaned she was able to put them back in with just minimal forcing.

  • Holy crap I didn't realize how little I know about piercings. My early FFFC: I had to Google hood piercing. You ladies are brave. I'm a wuss... but now curious. Is the piercing designed to enhance pleasure? To the original intent of this post I have nothing to offer. I was intrigued by nipple piercing when I was younger but see earlier note about me being a wuss....
I does give new perks to living on a bumpy road ;)

@MaineMama - I'm wincing at the thought of the process of reinserting the jewelry to see if they closed up. Eep. I was told by a piercer that a little force or oomph is needed to replace the jewelry in some cases. I'll just have to wait and see.

@LadyThrice - The VCH is said to increase pleasure for some, but the HCH is more for decoration. :)

  • I had mine pierced about ten years ago, and they were fine for months and one rejected in literally 3 days and I wasn't even really able to notice until it was actually hanging by a thread. Second one did the same thing two weeks later,so I have the added fun of having horizontal scars across my nipples. CMN said BFing should be fine but we shall see..

I had them in for a couple years and they never really healed and they've been out a long time so I'm sure they are closed but would never stick something in there to check. They still get little white things coming out all the time (like the corner of your eye) that I kind if squeeze to get the gunk out. This is 9+ years after I took them out and DS is 4 years old. If I had it to do all over again I never would. More hassle than anything.

  • I've had both pierced for about 6 years and took the out while pregnant with DS cuz my nipples were getting too big then BF for 6 months and was able to put them back in with minimal force when I was done. I had to take them out again this time for the same reason and I plan to put them back in after BF is over with this LO but if they've closed up, oh well.

  • Mine were pierced once upon a time. All you ladies with them still in have my total respect. My nips are so very sensitive to the touch at the moment that I can not even imagine taking them out/putting them back in! As for the hood piercing, high five to y'all! I came very close a few times but chickened out.
  • I had mine pierced about 10years ago and they have since closed almost all the way. Im worried scar tissue will interfere with breastfeeding but from what I have read online it shouldn't. *I hope*
  • I had my nipples done as a dare a few years and pretty soon after one rejected then a few years later had the whole "hanging by a thread issue" @agsgrrl had...

Yeah that's a lovely sight huh?
  • Plea from an L&D nurse: please take out all difficult to remove piercings prior to delivery. If you need an emergency c-section either your nurse will have to remove it, or in a true emergency it won't get removed and you could suffer a burn where the piercing is due to the metal...and I'm sure no one wants a burn in the region of a hood piercing! ;-)
