I was hired for a new teaching position at a private school ! I'm so happy to be at a new school where I can continue to develop my skills as an educator !
Oh yay! Congratulations! A K/1 split sounds like a challenge - balancing the "learning through play" aspect of kindergarten and the more focused learning of grade 1 sounds scary. Coming from someone who has no background in teaching or education.
@junebugjam where I am Kindergarten is still very much a play environment. Schooling is a little different in Canada. They're not even expected to know how to read or write their name here. I think they *should* know the alphabet, but it's not a requirement.
Also, I attended schools with a lot of split classes (I lived in VERY small towns, so it was often the only option). I LOVED my split-class teachers. They were always the most attentive, and you got just that little bit of freedom and the trust that you could work independently. I think you'll do great.

Wow really ? That sounds so nice. Here in the U.S., at least in Chicago, Kindergarten is nothing like it was when I was a kid.
In 2012 they had kindergarteners taking standardized tests until the CEO of the public school system deemed it "not age appropriate" and postponed it until 2nd grade.
The curriculum and work load that was expected of the students were on par with a 1st grade curriculum, no play time except for recess, assessments after every activity, and expectations to be a fluent reader by the end of the year !
Congratulations! Give us an update when you are further into the school year. I am interested to hear what you'll do.
And yes, my kindergarteners needed to be reading and doing some serious math (addition, understand subtraction, measurement increments) by the end of the year. A 5/6 year old unable to write their name is a HUGE red flag here.

The math curriculum even threw in basic algebra !
Thank you ladies for your well wishes !
