Does your kid wear pants?

Hi all. Mostly-lurker here (I say mostly because I've butted in on some baking threads lately). After 2+ frustrating years, DH and I are expecting our first in November (a girl)! I've lurked on here almost daily for about 5 months and have learned SOOOOO much from all the experienced CDers and all the newbies who ask the questions I want to ask but don't. You're all so nice, and helpful, even when a question has been asked a million times. I'll probably be one of those "newborn stash" posts next month after our shower.

But I have a question.

Now that people are starting to give us clothes, I'm looking at pants/shorts going "there's no way that's going to fit over a CD". I know leg warmers have been recommended on here before, so I bought 8 pairs of BabyLegs when they were on sale last month and have some more leg warmers on the registry. But since this will be a winter baby, and I'm in the northeast, I feel like I should have some pants for when we go places. Does your kid wear pants? What kind? Do you have to size up to accommodate the fluffy butt? Of all the things about CDing that you have to learn, this is one of the things that is baffling me the most!

I buy my LO pants that fit her.
Honestly the CDs keep her pants up bc she has zero bum. She is 2 years old, and we just passed all of her 6m pants and shorts down to her sister. So it's no big deal. Don't over think it.

All of the clothes fit accordingly within her age range and we never had to size up. Pants were never a problem. Now that she's older and SSTN with a huge night diaper, we put her in roomier onesies or PJs, but still most of the stuff in her age range fits.

You know those newborn sleepers that are like buntings with the open bottoms? Get like a million of those and some socks.

Lap gowns are my favorite for hanging around the house, but of course those don't work in a car seat if you're going out. I have long lean babies, so I have to size up pants to get the length, then the diaper fluff works to fill out the butt and keep the waist up. The only thing we never use is newborn size pants.

DS2 came home at just above 6 pounds, 20 inches long. For the first two week (yes it took a full 14 days for that stupid cord stump to fall off) he wore newborn size gerber side snap shirts, the cloth diaper, and socks, and was then wrapped in a blanket, loosely when awake, swaddled for sleeping. For the record, I live in the foggy part of the Bay Area CA, where it's always fall, and I'm cheap about running our furnace, so in the house is generally in the mid/upper 60's.

To go out, he wore a 3 month footed sleeper, but again, he needs that size for length, not necessarily for width, but it did fit nicely over the fluff. Now that the stump is off, we sometimes wear 0-3 onesies and pants, unless I get tired of the pants and just don't put them back on after a diaper change.

Just put on what fits.

Right now, no my kid doesn't wear pants. Maybe when we're going out, but that's about it.

Winter we did baby legs around the house, and pants outside over the baby legs. It helped make diaper changes easier/faster, and still let me coordinate CDs. Plus, it helped keep his ankles/lower legs covered as well when I would carry him somewhere.

Andplusalso, DS is still mostly in 12mo clothing, and almost 18mo. Is it because of the CDs that he's not in the appropriate sized clothing for his age?

This for us too. I have noticed the couple times he's been in sposies that suddenly he has a little extra room, but its not that big of a difference.

My DD is a winter babe as well so she definitely wore pants. Some of her clothes I did find that she did better with a bigger size in the pants than in the top but I think that had more to do with the fact that she has long legs than the diaper. I don't have an issue putting pants on over top of the cloth. Some pants actually fit better with a fluffy bum because she is so skinny. She's got a couple of pairs of 3 month pants that fit, and a bunch of 3 month shorts and capris that fit now, all over a cloth diaper and she is almost 7 months. I wouldn't worry about it until your baby gets here!

My kid almost always wears pants. We don't "size up" anything. He just wears what fits. His clothes are all a mix of 12-24 month stuff.

Thanks for all the ideas! I'm looking at all the clothes and they look so tiny, but to be honest, I have extremely limited experience with newborns and infants. I'm probably overestimating how big they are.

I'm a total over-thinker about everything, but your ideas have helped a lot. We'll just go with some onesies, rompers, sleepers, and buntings to start with and see how she grows. I'm getting to that "I don't know what I'm doing" part of pregnancy and freaking out a little. Freak out over!

summer baby, but he wore pants in the winter. We have a pair of Pomona Project jeans, which are marketed for fitting over cloth diapers. I really, really like them mostly because the same pair of pants that fit him at 4ish months still fit him well at 13 months with some room to grow still. They are a bit pricey but save money in the long run.

We don't have a problem with other pants not fitting because of his diaper though. I've got a little guy who still can wear 6 month tops and pants in some brands, while there are people on my BMB who have kids in 2T and they wear disposable diapers. Just wear what fits.

If you do find you need roomy-er pants, a lot of wahm's who do diapers also do pants with a little extra in the tush area. I know cutesy cloth does this, although I have found no need for pants yet. Texas winters are not that cold.

LOL. My kid rarely wears pants or shorts. A friend actually commented the other day that you can tell he never does, cause his shirts are messy and his pants/shorts always look brand new. I usually put pants on him when we are out and about. But he is now old enough and is in the clothing stripping stage and likes to take off all his clothing. Thank god we cloth diaper and he is unable to undo snaps! Or that would come off too.

We usually ended up upsizing pants with my little guy. We did baby legs and such as well. With a girl, you should have no problems with skirts and dresses. Also a lot of us use the diapers in place of pants and such. The diapers are cute, so why not! I was better about putting pants on my DS starting at about 16 months old. (As that was when it starts to get colder here and he was walking more, so less layers on him that in the first 15 months.

Pants fit my chunky guy! They started to get tight around the 9 - 10 month range, but they truly lean out. And he can still fit in those pants now at 14 months with a little room at the waist!
