Let's talk cervix...

No for real... Cervix. lol

My friend is pregnant and she is at the hospital bc of midnight intense contractions that have now gone away. She's been hooked up to monitors for hours and the baby is doing well but they said her cervix is "small and soft". What on earth does that mean??

She's 28 weeks. Just curious

  • What did her doc say?

Her doc told her they will closely monitor her. That's all she knows right now.

Yeah I'm wondering if they'll put her on bedrest? Do they do that for cervix concerns? I feel like if she's up on her feet all day it won't help the problem.

I feel terrible. Her husband is away on business until Monday and she has no other family nearby.
  • All I know was when I got induced and was beginning to dilate the nurse kept telling me my cervix was soft, whatever that means ? I would imagine the beginnings of labor ?

  • Just got an update. She asked and they said short soft cervix. She's getting admitted for at least 3 days and they don't think she'll be able to work (her job entails being on her feet all day). Getting a steroid shot for lung development. Man she's stressed :(

  • Yeah I keep telling her that even though it's not ideal she's in good hands. They have an amazing NICU (it's where Robert was for 10 days) so it really helps ease the worries. I'm going to try to visit. Not sure if they'll let me bring Robert. Poor girl

Good idea w the magazines and tea @babycaps‌ :)
  • Short and soft at 28 weeks would be considered preterm labour and I would expect her to stay longer than the 3 days. If she gets sent home after the 3 days she should be on modified duties, if not bed rest. Definitely not working on her feet. No dilation is good though!

I hope everything settles down for her and baby stays in for a few weeks yet!

  • So about 75% effaced. At least there is still a bit of thickness to it. A paper thin cervix would be really worrying.

  • And that is why I was put on strict bed rest at 28 weeks with my DD. :(
contractions 5 minutes apart, 90% effaced and 2 cm dilated.

It wasn't fun. My contractions slowed as long as I stayed laying down. They didn't really stop, but my doc feared if I kept working (on my feet 10 hours a day) that I would have LO within a week.

Best of luck to your friend. Tell her to take it easy. Follow doctor's orders.

I'm assuming small means short, and soft is another thing that happens as dilation begins.  It sounds like pre-term labor is definitely a threat for your friend.  I'll hold many prayers that it holds off and the baby bakes longer, but if it's any solace, the chances of survival and fewer complications should the baby be born now at 28 weeks is much much higher than say 22-24 weeks.

edit: It sounds like she is not dilated at all????  So I just wanted to amend my comment about dilation since it doesn't necessarily mean she will dilate.  But in terms of the cervix, anytime before close to the due date we want it long, hard and closed.

  • So she's been having contractions off and on her entire hospital stay. Just this morning she had contractions for over an hour at about 4 min apart. No changes to her cervix in the last 24 hours though.

They think she's dehydrated, hence the contractions, but she's been drinking water and peeing constantly.

They're sending her home and telling her to stay off her feet as much as possible. No specific bed rest restrictions.

This all worries me but her doctors don't seem too concerned... :-/
