How else would you pronounce Alina? I really don't think it's necessary to change the spelling to "Aleena"... that is kind of ridiculous if you ask me.
It's my husband's step-sister's name, she's 28/29 ish. Her parents call her Alina but to everyone else she is Ali. I've always liked her name. It's pretty but not too cutesy or complicated.
"Alina is a female given name of Greek origin which means "light". It is still regarded as a relatively rare and exotic name in the Western world, despite now beginning to be more widely adopted, in places such as France and Brazil."
As a ttm the very best advise I can give you is find a name you love. Next step tell no one the name and give no shits if other people like it. You clearly have enough sense not to name your kid something absurd like irveibfigddg. There will always be someone who doesn't like it. My opinion of the name means nada so I just hope you find something you love.
I hate the argument of " name pronunciation" because lets be real. My friend Marie gets called Mary. Brendan, Brandon. Alisia, Alisha. People will probably always call you the wrong name.... unless you go super traditional like john.
Edited because I wanted to add that in my area, if you go over one town to the next you're easily the minority. So along with cultural and ethnicity changes comes language barriers.

My name is Kristina. I get Kristine, Kristin, Kris...actually, the nurse the other day called me Kris--I couldn't even stop myself, I actually said "Don't call me that, it's Kristina". Knee-jerk reaction. Oops.
I had an Alina in class a few years ago. She was a doll and I loved having her, so the name makes me happy too!
ETA: Check out the baby name board. They give lots of good advice and have the linguistics background to help out!
I had an Alina two years ago. Loved that kid. No one ever mispronounced her name as far as I could tell. As long as you don't twist the pronunciation to something crazy like ah-line-ah, you're fine.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
I'm fairly indifferent about it, but I definitely pronounced it as Aleena. I much prefer the Alina spelling. You might some butchering of the name, but as long as you're not one to get bent out of shape over it, I'd say go for it if you love it.
I do love the name Alina but that's why this forum is so great bc I don't know any of you. Don't get me wrong I'm sure all of you are wonderful people and I pray God blesses us all but at the end of the day, it's the anonymity of this that makes hearing your comments so fun And some comments are very helpful - like the comments about people knowing people with the name Alina and loving them - makes me love the name even more!
I knew the pronunciation. My first thought was of the little mermaid. I feel like that was one of the names of the mermaids. Anyway, I like it and wouldn't change the spelling.
I've said this before, but to people who say the opinions of others doesn't matter, I disagree. This isn't your name, it is your child's name and he or she will have to live with it his or her whole life. Hearing what others think allows you to see the reactions your child will get his or her whole life. A name is part of first impressions and you want to do the best you can for your child in that regard. Many people aren't name nerds or name aware and don't know what is trendy or yoonique, what will be soooo dated in ten years...it is good to hear from others for a multitude of reasons. This simply isn't about JUST you.
All that said, Alina is NMS but not awful, however if you use it, definitely spell it Alina, not Aleena.
I think it's sweet and feminine, and like that it's a little unusual but not just weird. I had no questions about how to pronounce it and I like the spelling.
That said, it's not a name I hate. If you changed the spelling to Aleena I would feel sorry for the kid, though. It sounds nice out loud and I could see an Alina in most professional fields. Not a lot of sucky nicknames for making fun. Plus Ali is cute if you go that route. Overall, if you love it, I say go for it!
Re: What do you think of this name?
Haha I'm already doubting now
