Baby bath question!

I picked up a baby bath yesterday at Babies R Us (one of those with a water reserve). It looked nice but now I've been thinking that it might be kind of useless!

So, I'm a FTM and have never even seen an infant bathed. What do I actually need/do you use? Is the baby bath even worth it or can you just get one of those hammock/cot things for the tub?

I'm hoping to make it back to Babies r us today and will probably return it if it's as useless as I think.

Thanks!

Re: Baby bath question!

  • We got a bathtub and then a sling to sit inside.  The sling did get gross after awhile but by then she could sit in the tub without it.  I can't seem to find a sling this time around though.

This is the tub we got for my son.  We put it inside the regular tub in case he splashed, less to clean up later.  It has a sling for newborns, one side is leaning for smaller infants, then the other side allows them to sit up in it.  My son used it until he started walking, then we just put him in the regular tub with a couple of inches of water.  I really liked it.  I do know some people who just sanitize and use a kitchen sink or a bathroom sink.  Ours were really small though and I liked the way this tub was designed to help support them so I could use both of my hands.

ETA: The sling was machine washable.

  • We had one and used it until DD outgrew it. It was just a simple plastic tub from Target but made bathing baby in the kitchen sink easy.

  • We used the baby bath in the sink for a few months. She started off in the mesh sling IN the baby tub IN the sink (after her cord came off) and then we could remove the sling and seat her directly in the tub. When she started sitting up in it, we moved into the big tub with a fabric bumper thing that kept her more confined. We used that until she was getting more mobile and we could trust how steady she was, then we just used the open tub.

  • Wow! Looks like a lot more people used them than I would have thought. Didn't know about sponge bathing in the beginning.

I like the examples. The one I got was pricier I had a babies r us gift card and have been so lost as to what to get. I've been scouring all the lists on here and am basically trying to buy everything in the next 3 -4 weeks. (Thanks by the way @FrecklesInside‌ for the suggestion of the piano play mat thing! Found one of those and it's so cute!!)

This is the bath I got:

(Summer infant baths are 20% off with coupon this week)

    But is this overkill?

@katydid2014‌ I didn't even think about mildew/etc. Do you just clean baby tubs with warm water? Clorox seems like a bad idea!
  • I had the Fisher Price Whale of  Tub as well.

  • My personal opinion: buy a cheap baby bath because you may never use it. We had a eurobath and used it literally one time. Complete waste of money. I think I'd like the mesh one better but the eurobath was slippery. Mostly I just bathed him with me or in the sink and when he was old enough transitioned him to a bath seat.

  • Sounds like people have a lot of luck with the simple ones :-)

  • We always just used our kitchen sink :) I liked it cause I didn't have to bend over the tub. DD also seemed to really like the sprayer. When she got to big I just put her in the tub with a little water.
  • @etoille I saw that one, I think? Does it work through toddler? Any issues that you've come across?
  • We had a tub with the sling attachment. We used it until 5-6 months until she could confidently sit up by herself. Worth every penny.

  • I had this little mesh tub/chair I used for my daughter when she was a newborn. It was perfect because I was able to just wash around her belly button the first couple of weeks to keep the umbilical cord dry. We just recently bought her a larger tub from target that looks like a whale since she out grew the other one. She loves it!! She's able to sit up or lean back. She kicks and giggles like crazy. I def recommend. It also comes with this little toy with holes on the bottom that allow you to sprinkle water all over her. So cute. Bath time is her favorite time. She's 7 months.
  • We used the Angelcare bath support and loved it. This one.

We also have the Primo Eurobath (gifted to us)and really don't like it at all. It's really huge and we found it harder to bathe her in the infant position. After LO outgrew the Angelcare we just switched her to sitting up unassisted in the tub.

  • The eurobath is very slick and hard for little babies. I like one with a along insert.
  • We used the whale tub in the beginning but it wasn't long before we learned my son is a total water baby and loved showers (2-3 months). I would just set him in his rock n play outside the shower while I got cleaned up then pick him up and bring him in the shower with me. We have a seat in our shower and I would hold him on my lap and wash him. We'd often just sit in there until the hot water ran out. Once he was older and sitting up well on his own we started bath time in the big tub which is what we do now.

I know nothing about baby baths, but does that one come in adult size?  Because I'd like some jets and a whirlpool feature.  Lol

  • I was given the whale of a tub. I used it until he was ready for a bath seat. When he was itty bitty I folded a towel up for him to lay on since it was soft and just washed him off. It worked really well. I like simple things that don't have a lot of parts. Less stuff to break and fuss with. And it's easy to clean.
  • I would suggest not spending much on a tub. I got in with dd and she loved it. I even could nurse her if she got fussy.
