Pregnant after 35

1st trimester nausea, weight loss vs gain

So this is an interesting turn of events.

With DS #1, I had horrible morning sickness and heartburn. Despite my best efforts, I didn't get it under control until around 10 weeks. It didn't totally go away until 18 weeks. I lost 10lbs between week 5 - week 10, then slowly got back to my starting pregnancy weight after that. (Don't hate me yet. I made up for it later in the pregnancy).

Now, with baby #2, I am having all the same symptoms. But this time I know how to control them and started as soon as the second line appeared on the HPT. Zantac around the clock. Zofran around the clock. Tums when things are bad. Small frequent meals. Lots of carbs and dairy (which is killing me because I was eating paleo before the pregnancy). The results? The symptoms are controlled AND I already gained 10lbs by 7 weeks. I guess I'll be going back on paleo when the 2nd trimester hits. I also need to workout, but my energy is totally zapped by the time I get home for the day and get the toddler in bed.

Re: 1st trimester nausea, weight loss vs gain

  • I am 18 weeks and I have officially gainned 1 lb. I haven't had morning sickness since 11 wks. At least you know how to control it. And best of luck with working out. I am still exhausted all the time.

  • Well....I know how to control it. But "controlling" it means eating high carb foods around the clock.

I think by 18 weeks the last time, I was up maybe 3lbs from my starting weight, but I had to make up the difference from the weight loss too.

Meh, if your doc is not concerned and you're feeling better when you eat all those carbs then don't stress. There must be a reason why many esp protein eaters crave those carbs so much when pregant. Your body must need them to build the baby.

And don't get stuck on just the number on the scale.
I have already gained 30lbs as of my 24w appointment BUT my BMI after the gain is still within a healthy normal range for a person who is NOT pregnant (under 24 I think) so why get stressed over that...

If you're eating a mostly nutritious and balanced diet then I would just let it be.
  • Sounds like a tricky place to be @mattandlora . I guess there's no point worrying until you're past the MS phase.  Do you think a lot of it is water weight due to the carbs and dairy?

I haven't gained any weight since getting pregnant even though I'm eating more carbs, like oven fries at least once a day.  My appetite is much smaller though, due to slower digestion.  So, I'm eating less volume overall.  Except for the past week, I've been trying to keep up with some sort of exercise (walking 2-3/ a week, body weight exercises 2/ week).  For me it does mean that something else doesn't get done, but I can afford to prioritize exercise (no other kids, not working FT).
  • I'm 18 weeks I have gained 3 lbs now but still down two from pre pregnancy weight. I'm craving more carbs and protein this time around last time it was salads, fruit and oatmeal. Lol I can't really say its made me gain more. I think I have more of a bump but DH says its the same..:) oh and before writing this I scarfed down two powdered donuts! Hope that makes you feel better! Hahaha

  • I'm not worried as much as I'm astonished by how weird the human body is. I think a LOT of it is water weight from re-introducing carbs and dairy after 7 months without it. I feel like I'm hungry more than normal too. I don't know if that is the change in diet (burning through carbs like gasoline on a fire) or if it is the pregnancy, or both. Well, I guess I'm not always hungry. Sometimes I'm trying not to puke. I go from "I'm gonna puke, need a Zofran" to cookie monster on a binge once the meds kick in.
