Many women including myself on this board are still nursing while pregnant. Some women tandem nurse both after the baby is born. There are some reasons to stop if you have a very high risk pregnancy, but generally it is considered perfectly safe.
My OB recommends weaning after 1st trimester but like PP said, there are women who bf throughout. I think it depends on your particular pregnancy and Dr.
I also have an 18 mo that I'd like to wean. I'm 11wks along with #2. My OB just said "Some people will advise you not to breastfeed while pregnant because it releases oxytocin." It can cause contractions. But so many people continue to BF while preg and tandem nurse, it really depends on your pregnancy. If you're having complications, consider weaning. So far, I'm not, so I'm going slow with weaning (my LO loves to nurse, so it's taking a while).
If you aren't experiencing complications, you should be able to nurse as long as you and your little one want to. If you are experiencing complications, you may need to stop to reduce the risks to the new baby.
I get mild cramping while nursing nothing I can't handle but I think I notice it more now that the dr freaked me out. It's hard because she still nurses a lot. I've been trying vinegar on my nipple seems to decrease the amount of BF but I get sad thinking about it. My husband told me I need to stop cold turkey but she cries and I don't like letting her cry. I give up and end up BF her
I'm part if a breast feeding support group and someone posted this picture a while back. This was taken by a woman who was tandem nursing her newborn on one side and 2 year old on the other. She was getting colostrum on one side and milk on the other! Super cool. She nursed through her entire pregnancy with no problems. I wouldn't worry about it. My son is 18 mo and still nursing every once in a while too
still bfing my 21 month old. I plan to continue as my DD chooses unless I have other complications or preterm contractions. I know plenty that continue to nurse with no problems. Some littles self wean as supply goes down or the taste changes. I am just taking things as they come!
If your Doc is okay with you having an orgasm, then you can breastfeed. Good old oxytocin is also released when you come, it is why we feel that warm loving glow.
If you are on pelvic rest, and high risk THEN it may be a different story.
LLL also has released a book "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" that is a great resource and talks about how women have felt when breastfeeding while pregnant and while nursing an older baby. Some women had to wean earlier than they had planned, not because their doctor told them to, but because their nipples became to sensitive and they couldn't tolerate it anymore. Sometimes the babies weaned before mother was ready, because as the milk changed back to colostrum, it became more salty and less sweet and they didn't care for it.
Also please stop putting vinegar on your nipples. Ouch.
Re: Anyone been told to stop BF or you can misscarie?
