Cloth diapers...anyone making?

Hey ladies. My newest adventure is going to be making some cloth diapers for little one! Just wondering if anyone is making or going to try and make some too? :)

Re: Cloth diapers...anyone making?

  • I applaud you. Soooo...no. lol
I'm weak! I may ask my OB if there's any way we can just make LO not use the bathroom for a few years. That would be better for me :|

  • I looked into it a while ago and by the time I would buy the materials I wanted (zorb. PUL, snaps/aplix, good quality elastic) I really wouldn't be saving any money and probably just stressing myself out.  If you were planning on making more hybrid type diapers and weren't necessarily wanting "cute" fabric, you could probably make it financially make sense, but I just couldn't.  I was also worried about my learning curve on making them and wasting some materials while I got my technique up to snuff.

  • I'm making mine just very basic not cute patterns and what not. I'm going to be out of work because I would essentially be working to pay someone to watch our kids. That's not going to happen. So I'm not cheap-in on the fabric. Just not doing extensive cute patterns and just basic stuff :)
  • We use cloth diapers, but I am no where near crafty enough to make them myself!   I'm impressed.  Good luck.

Good for you!  You might also look into building part of your stash with dipes that are sold in need of repair.  I got some good deals from a few diaper retailers that have rental programs, buying their "retired" rental diapers.  I'm guessing replacing elastics and aplix wouldn't be hard for you.  I've shied away from buying dipes that need repair from private sellers just because you never know what you will get, but sites like Modern Cloth do a really good job of categorizing theirs and I usually got diapers that were better than advertised.

  • Thanks for the tip!!! I'm super excited!
  • I also cloth diaper. I don't make my own, but I do repair my own. KAM snap pliers are awesome and not too expensive. You can get them on Amazon or from the KAM website. The site (https://www.kamsnaps.com/) has some great tutorials and templates for adding snaps to diapers, they are super helpful!

  • We are on the fence about cloth diapers. I want to use them for at home only (I told DH when we leave the house that child will be in disposable!), but am doing a toss up between buying, making, or just using cloth. With only 13 weeks to go, I guess I need to make a decision. :(
  • I use Best Bottom diapers.  They have an absorbent snap-on insert and diaper covers.  I bought my Best Bottoms diapers to start with but have made a bunch of diaper covers since then.  I used a cover that was falling apart as my pattern.  I've probably got as many handmade ones as purchased ones now.

  • We were on the fence too. But the more and more research I've done just convinces me to just do it and dive in! :) for me the pros out way the cons
  • We are going to be CD'ing.  I'm not making my day-time diapers (I'm more of a straight-line sewer), but I am knitting my soakers for overnight.  I'll be using the workhorses from Green Mountain Diapers as the absorbent layer and the wool soakers as the waterproof layer.  I'm using the pattern "curly purly" which is free on ravelry.com.  Yarn.com has great sales on 100% wool that make it a pretty inexpensive option compared to buying premade wool covers, (make sure you don't get superwash wool).  I'm an ok knitter, but certainly not a pro.  There was a learning curve with the pattern but now that I understand it I'm flying through it.  My first attempt will probably not fit a human baby, I made the legs a bit too tiny.
