Gender Reveal

If you found out your little one's gender, how many weeks were you when you found out? I always thought at 20 weeks you could find out, but I've noticed people are finding out sooner.

Re: Gender Reveal

  • If you are talking about the anatomy scan at your doctors office, usually that is around 20wks. I think the range is 16-22wks. A nice bonus of the anatomy scan is finding out the sex of your baby.

Some people have the ultrasound tech guess at 12wk appointments.

At around 16wks you can have elective ultrasounds done, where sex can be determined.

The rest of us that know for sure have had some sort of blood testing done. Typically they are genetic screenings and are medical tests. The purpose is not for sex determination, however a nice bonus.

  • I took my NIPT blood at 11weeks, results came in at 12 weeks so the doc knew at 12 weeks what the baby was. I didn't want to find out over phone or email I had a cute reveal idea with balloon and confetti and my son. So she mailed the sex to me. I found out at 13 weeks I am having another baby boy :)
It's a genetic test though and my understanding the one I did is for older woman 35 +.
But it is a genetic test with a bonus if finding out the sex early.

I had to share my pic, hope you don't mind. The black balloon has the colored confetti in it. My husband popped it over his head :) none of us knew what was inside :)
  • Your ultrasound will be around 18-21 weeks. This is to check for fetal anomalies and potential issues. They may be able to make a good guess at the sex as well.

I have known people to get optional 16 week scans, or pay for 3d scans. Or have testing done that tells them 100% what they are having much sooner. The testing is never to find out the sex, it is usually checking for genetic issues/downs syndrome, etc. if you are higher risk or want to have it.

We are team green and probably not having the 20 week scan. My midwife offers it if you want it but the thing is that the scans are not conclusive for issues they are looking for, and often babies are misdiagnosed or you need even more testing just to learn that nothing was wrong to begin with. Having the scan does not statistically improve the outcomes for mothers or babies. We are very low risk being both young and healthy, and have no family risk factors. We also have no interest in finding out the sex of our baby before birth. So, not everyone gets the scan just fyi! :)

  • We had our elective this week. The ultrasound place in my area requires you to be at least 14 weeks.

  • Thanks ladies! I really appreciate all of your advice.
Super cute announcements for the gender reveal as well.
We have a party planned for our family, but I don't think I can wait that long to find out myself. :)

I'll be 17 weeks at my next doctors appointment, but I don't think I'll get an ultrasound until 20 weeks. Patience is a virtue, I suppose. Haha!

I'm curious to find out if my gender dream was accurate. It was a pretty intense and personal encounter with loved ones who have passed handing me a little girl and saying, "Here's (name)." My husband and I had only recently within the week agreed on a name for a little girl. I just really want to know if it was all true. (I know there a skeptics out there, but I truly believe in these encounters, so please no negativity.)
