Trying not to panic

So I'm trying to hold it together and not give in to anxiety but I can't seem to put my mind at easy by myself, I was hoping maybe some of you ladies could help me relax. Maybe let me know that what is happening to me is normal?
So last night H asked if we could have sex, I said yes but we had to be gentle. So all was fine but a few hours later (I can't seem to sleep at night) when I went to the bathroom there was light pink on the paper. So I totally freaked out and did a panic induced Google search at midnight. I read that it was okay as long as it wasn't bright red or accompanied by severe cramps, and tried to relax but then this morning there was a small amount of brown discharge. I can't really call my doctor because I don't have one yet, still waiting for the call back. I just really could use some reassurance that I'm okay for now, has this happened to anyone else? Anything to help call this first time mom's mind would be amazing.

Re: Trying not to panic

  • From what I understand, this is quite normal. I had brown spotting and went to my OB Gyn. She said that it is common after penetration. Our blood vessels in our cervix are sensitive especially in the first trimester. Some women experience nose bleeds, bleeding gums, and spotting because of the increased blood flow and hormones.
If you feel uncomfortable or anxious, put your mind at ease and go to the ER if you're still shopping for a doctor. Don't ignore your gut. But I have a feeling that everything will be just fine!
  • Totally normal. Try to take it easy today.

  • Very normal. Your cervix is very sensitive while pregnant meaning the slightest irritant can cause bleeding. Light spotting is OK. The brown spotting from today is carried over from yesterday....completely normal. Just relax and know that my doctor explained this to me during my first check up. No need to be alarmed just put your feet up and try to calm yourself :)

I'm sorry, but this is terrible advice. Do not use the ER as your OB. ER trips should be reserved for emergencies.

Spotting after sex is totally normal, and good news that it's turned brown quickly meaning it's old blood. I'd also call my doctor to let them know and ask what you should do if it happens again. Good luck to you.

I think saying horrible advice is a little much, don't you think. I take complete offense to that as a) we don't know everyone's financial/ health care situation and I'm only trying to help b) we don't have all the facts if someone is high risk or not. Personally, I am high risk and I spotted while on vacation (not near my OB Gyn). It is absolutely very scary, so I understand fears. So let's try to be nice on these boards and respect everyone's situation.
  • As PPs have said, this is really normal.  I've been totally freaked out by this, too.  This happened to me during my entire last pregnancy because the bits down there are super sensitive.

I agree with @mrsrexmaning that it seems a premature to use the ER unless there is bright red or clots.  It will save you a lot of angst if you try to be patient for the callback.

  • This happened to me in my first pregnancy and my doc said it's normal but if it worries me to avoid sex until 2nd tri. Don't go to the ER unless you're soaking a pad an hour.
  • Brown spotting is totally normal, it is scary though. I hope you find a doctor quickly.

  • Thank you everyone for all the kind words and reassurances! I feel so much better and was even able to get a few more hours of sleep. I will let my doctor know about this when I get called back (I'm waiting for the military system to work)  I read some of this info but 1 am in a panic does not make for a good learning environment. Again thank you guys!
