Okay to dye my hair????

With my first pregnancy 8 years ago, I didn't die my hair at all. With my second pregnancy I think I did it twice the entire pregnancy. What is the "word" these days about coloring hair while pregnant???

Re: Okay to dye my hair????

  • My sister is a hair dresser. She's colored her hair several times during both her pregnancies. She just colored mine and this is my first pregnancy. All her hair dresser friends say it's fine. I know their not doctors but I've known several of them who were pregnant and colored their hair and it was all
Fine. So I say go for it.

  • My doctor said it was fine!
  • Just had mine done today, my hair lady dyed hair throughout her pregnancies she just wore gloves. She said as long as you don't have direct contact with the product on a regular basis.
  • I just asked my OB on Friday and he said it was fine. The only thing he mentioned was that patients have told him that sometimes the hair that's grown since they had gotten pregnant dyed a darker shade than the rest! So he said not to be terribly shocked if I ended up with darker roots :)

  • Well, you have to think about it this way. If your hair dresser is female, chances are she has either had, or will have children. You wouldn't expect her to all of a sudden stop taking 95% of her clients because she pregnant, for fear of the chemicals? Or ask any of her coworkers not to do colors on people because she's pregnant. She'd lose her business and all her clientele. So obviously, even though the rule of thumb is you shouldn't dye your hair, its more so, you shouldn't dye your hair without proper ventilation. I know, when my hair lady was pregnant, each time she would ask the ladies to open the windows for an hour or so to ventilate the room of the harsh fumes whenever she did a dye job. And both her sons were born healthy and full term. Now I know for certain that you should NEVER get a brazilian blow out while pregnant as the chemicals that straighten the hair mix into formaldehyde when exposed to oxygen; its not safe for even healthy nonpregnant women to breathe.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm so glad to hear this as my hair needs dying badly!
  • I had mine done about a month ago.  My hairstylist uses an organic brand of dye so I wasn't too worried about it.  She did say that the only issue that she has had with pregnant women is that they react to the smell of hair dye but ever since she had switched to using organic dye it isn't a problem anymore.  Go for it momma!

that is a weird assumption to make, I know LOTS of women past child bearing age that have never had children.

  • My nurses actually told me to call my hairdresser for advice about this! My stylist uses less toxic color but also really recommends highlights instead of all-over color. Your hair itself doesn't get dye into your system, but your scalp does. If you're like me and like to stay away from chemicals, stick to highlights if possible and you should be fine!

It was more of a generalization than assumption based on the ladies I know at my salon. I guess I should have worded it a little differently. Oh well.

I always do mine myself. Did it about three weeks ago, but I have a lot of gray, just did it in a well ventilated area :) No issues, color turned out fine!

Ok thank you and what brand do you use?
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I do my own too, and I'll be redoing it tonight! I have an unnatural shade of red (so it's obvious I dye it) and while I haven't asked my midwife about it, she hasn't said not to do it. I use Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color. Their Olia color is great and doesn't smell near as bad, but I never can find it in my shade.
  • Ok that's good thank you ladies mycolor is fading out and I might go with a dark brown this time around.
  • Sorry, sharing this on his thread just had to be done.....
