TTC after 35

Introduction

Hi all!

I've been lurking here on and off a bit, and decided to finally make a post.

I'm not good at this personal-ad-type-stuff, so I'll just give the skinny as best I can and you all can free to grill me ask me questions as you'd like! :)

I'm 36 - turning 37 in December. I have a DS who is almost 3. DH and I were together 5 years before getting married right at 30. We wanted to wait to start a family to travel a bit, which we did. Took just over a year to conceive my first.

Stopped BC after DS turned 1. I think I kind of hoped it would happen without much effort the second time, but no such luck. We've been trying for real for the last year now. Had been temping and stuff, but I was making my husband myself crazy! So planning on just watching my body for signs, maybe using OPK's (because I'm too type A to do NOTHING) and doing the best we can for the next few months anyway.

I feel like all of my RL friends who are my age already have a couple of kids now. And my friends who are trying are several years younger than me. So I wanted a place where I felt like I had more in common with ladies. Here I am!

Looking forward to getting to know you all :)

  • Welcome and Good Luck.  Your story is so similar to mine. I turn 37 in January and and it has also taken us longer to conceive the 2nd time around.  Most of our friends are done too.  I hope your journey from here on out is short.  Have you thought about seeing an RE?  After the age of 35 I think you can get one after 6 months without a BFP.

  • Hello, and welcome! I also have a 3 yr old. She is an Aug 2011 baby. :)
I wish you the very best, and hope your stay is short and sweet!
  • Welcome!  I'm older than you (40), but in kind of the same place.  DD is 14 months, and we've been trying since December for #2.  Despite my age, I was surprised that it's been so difficult the second time around.  Looks like there's a lot of that going around!

I second pps suggestion of an appointment with an RE, or at least some basic tests with your OB so you'll know what  you're working with.  Good luck!

  • Hi all and thanks so much for the warm welcome!

To answer the main question I think you all posed, yes I have considered an RE... It's something I struggle with honestly.

Not because I don't believe in that kind of thing or just want it to happen naturally. But because our decision to try for a second wasn't cut and dry. We weren't sure we wanted two. We decided to 'see what happens' for awhile and in the last year have been trying for real mainly because I don't want to regret not giving it a real shot someday.

At one point, we said if it hasn't happened by the time I turn 37, we'll just be happy with what we have. Not because I think that's 'too old' but because we want to move on at some point. Now that I'm just a few months away from that, I'm not sure how I feel about it. The plan is to go with the flow until the first of the year. Fall is always crazy busy for us anyway. And then have a long talk about it at that point if we're not pregnant and decide if we still want to pursue it or not. If we do, that's when I'll go the RE route probably.

Though I reserve the right to change my mind completely :)
