I know this was a GTKY question about a month ago, but I'm curious to know from STM what is realistic for your first post delivery meal---are you super hungry? Can your digestive system handle heavier foods or are you relegated to liquids?
I didn't want to eat during labor (all 22 hours of active labor and pushing) at all. I forced down half a Clif Bar and that was it. After delivery I was starving and wolfed down a burger and fries my mom brought me.
DS was born after 11pm. Then he had to be observed for an hour, I needed to be stitched and finish my pitocin, move to the postpartum room to meet DH and DS, etc. It was well after midnight and probably closer to 1-2am before I even considered food.
That said, when I did get to eat I was starving!!! I think I ate a cheeseburger, and I don't remember if my mom brought it to me from McDonald's or something or if the hospital kitchen sent it. That's a memory I didn't hold onto too tightly. Lol
I don't even remember eating until the next morning. DD was born around 8pm, I think we got transferred to our recovery room at like 10 or 11 after our visitors left. I may have had a cheese sandwich and apple juice from the parent room fridge but I have no idea.
Breakfast was typical hospital food breakfast: scrambled eggs, fruit, coffee, milk, juice and oatmeal.
I don't think I was really hungry. The nurses kept giving me peanut butter crackers because they said I had to eat since I couldn't eat during labor. Once I finally wanted to eat something, all I could stomach was a salad... Which was a huge bummer because I had planned on eating sushi as soon as I had my son
I was starving and very much "eat all the things!" My (ex)DH brought me delicious food, and I made it disappear in minutes. The plan this time around, if I deliver between 11am and 11pm is fajitas and sweet tea (super hard to find up here). Any other time of day, and someone will make a fast food run.
It's going to depend on your labor and how you feel. I have a picture of me stuffing my face with a doughnut about an hour after I had DD1. Not my finest moment. But I delivered her at 2:30 in the afternoon. DD2 came at 1am and I pretty much just went right to sleep after I was done and then ate a huge breakfast. I was surprised at how hungry I was with both my kids and breastfeeding. I swear I was always starving. BRING ME ALL THE FOOD!!!!

I didn't really want to eat for awhile. Dd was born just before 3:30pm and the nurses were practically shoving food down my throat around 830 or 9. The next morning they brought in breakfast and the eggs made me feel sick just by the smell.
But we did order pizza when we went home and I ate 3 pieces instantly. It just took me awhile to be hungry.
With my first I had a vaginal delivery and was starving. It was early morning so my dad got me breakfast and cranberry grape juice from the hospital. It was the most delicious meal ever! I thought cranberry grape juice was the best drink ever!
With my second I had a c - section and they would only let me have fluid until I passed gas. I wasn't hungry though. I think from all the meds and surgery.
This time I'm hoping I can have real food by the night after my rcs because it's dh & my anniversary and I would like to have some kind of somewhat nice meal even though it will be take out. Lol
I wasn't hungry at all during labor with DD, but right after I delivered her I ate like a piggy. My mom came in with three Wendy's burgers for me about 20 minutes after I delivered and I ate every bite. This time around I'm hoping for something a little more appetizing but I'm starting to think I'll probably eat almost anything after delivering! Lol
I was starving almost immediately after B was born. The nurse was kind enough to set aside a boxed dinner for me from the cafeteria. It was about 10pm when he was born and the cafeteria was closed by then. I think I wolfed down a turkey sandwich, some potato salad and a cookie. And then my H went out to grab me a chocolate milkshake around midnight.
I pushed for 2 hours and DS was born at 11:30pm. The hospital brought me in some broth around 2-3 or so, and I didn't eat a real meal until breakfast. I don't remember being especially hungry, but I hadn't eaten for over 24 hours at that point.
I had eaten dinner the night I was in early labor, but as soon as active labor started that didn't last (apparently I'm a vomiter..yuck). Labor all night, had DD around noon the next day - when we were settled in the post partum room I remember having a sandwich and I'd guess I had something for dinner but I don't remember. We both will never forget 1-2am rolling around that first night with her - hunger hit, DH ran down to the hospital's Wendy's and we had a feast.
DD was born around 8am and I had vomited for hours in labor, so I was quite hungry. I ordered eggs and toast from the hospital and when they came, I couldn't wait to eat. After about 2 bites, I felt like I was going to throw up. I ended up not eating for maybe another 4-6 hours after that. I was so hungry, but then food made me sick.

Count me in the starving category. I was in labor for 22 hours and pushed for 4.5 on top of that, and I think all I ate during that time was bone broth. We started pushing around 4:30 and DS was born at 8:58 PM. Our hospital is small, so the kitchen wasn't open at that time, but they did have a cold plate ready for me (a salad, sandwich, veggies and dip, and a cookie), but they didn't have anything for DH, so he had to run out anyway. We scarfed down a huge platter of sushi at 11 PM! It was the best sushi I ever had.

24 hours of labor, 4 1/2 hours of pushing, and IT'S A BOY!
Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
I was famished. I'd had a chicken burger for lunch and then basically nothing until DS was born at 2am. My lovely L&D nurse scrounged up some toast and PB for me, but that was all they could find at that hour.
THEN, I somehow got skipped for breakfast. Nothing like being in a ward room when the 3 other people get their breakfast and you get nothing. If that happens again I'll for sure be speaking up!! H brought me McD's breakfast when he finally got there around 9am. I was so so hungry.
I delivered at 9am Weds and had been awake since Monday morning. Slept for 4 hours after delivery, but I was so nauseous that I was barely able to eat anything. I forced down a few bites of a turkey sandwich. Then asked H to bring me poptarts because they sounded good.

I had a 44 hour labor, and barely ate at all. I went in on a Monday afternoon, had liquids only that night and nothing until that Wednesday night. When you are in active labor, you don't really feel like eating.
I was starving after DS2 was born since I hadn't eaten anything in 36 hours. DS2 was born a few minutes before midnight, so the hospital cafeteria was already closed. My awesome nurse was smart and had me order a sandwich and some other food, so I had it food in the fridge.
DS#1 was born at 8 am so I ordered breakfast once I got into my recovery room (it probably was 9:30 or 10 by time that happened). I was starving bc the last time I ate was dinner the night before and I pushed for 4 hours! I'm pretty sure I ordered french toast, eggs, fruit.
With DS, the hospital provided a deli sandwich, chips, soda, and a cookie, while I was still in the delivery room. I didn't even think about it but gratefully they brought the food before I had a chance to realize how hungry I was. I'm delivering at a different hospital this time so I guess I need to inquire on whether they provide a meal after labor or if I need to provide my own. I really don't have any special requests this time around either.

My first labor was 24 hours and then I had a c-section. The hospital I was at wouldn't let me have any food that entire time so I went without food for about 27 hours and I was STARVING. My parents brought me some fries and a shake shortly after I made it into my room and nursed my son. I didn't eat as much as I wanted to, but I was definitely hungry and ready to eat. (This was after being under general anesthesia).
My second, I had a repeat c-section, with a spinal so I was awake and baby was born at 7:30 am, I was out of recovery and in my room by 8:30am and was eating lunch by 11:30. My hospital didn't give me restrictions on food and I was hungry so I went ahead and ate. I had no problems with any of it.
I don't remember exactly when or what I first ate after delivery, probably just some Gatorade and a protein bar I took. The first "meal" was a chicken wrap from the hospital. Both times. My hospital has really good food! I am already planning on ordering a chicken wrap again. Or a Reuben. Mmmmm.
I checked in at 7am and I hadn't eaten since dinner. They wouldn't let me eat at all, except ice chips, and I didn't have lo until 9:30 that evening vis c/s after 30 hours. I immediately passed out. The next morning, around 8, my doc said I could eat. I called down to the kitchen and ordered a meal for about 3 people... only to have them call back 5 minutes later to tell me since I had a c/s, I was on a restricted diet and could only have jello. It had been over 36 hours since I had eaten and I was starving. I could hear my ob outside my room, so I climbed out of bed roughly 12 hours post ecs and chased waddled after him down the hall yelling "You said I could eat!" He hadn't put it in the computer yet, he had just went into the next room. My nurse kindly called the kitchen and waived my restriction. I ate all the food ">
I delivered DD at 4:00 pm and hadnt had anything other than half a bagel the night before. I was starving and was so glad it was supper time at the hospital. I dont remember what I ate for supper but I do remember eating this HUGE piece of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. It was soooo good. I never wanted any sweets when I was pregnant with her so it was funny why this was so good.
My first labor was 16 hours and ended in a c-section. After the baby was born they let me have some broth and apple juice. Later that day I ate a huge amount of rice and chicken from a Mediterranean place. I had barely eaten the day before and thrown up what I had managed to eat. I was hungry!
I was induced. They told me to stop eating at 11am and to come into L&D at 7pm to get things going. DS arrived at 9pm the next evening. I didn't get to eat or drink for 34 hours. After delivery, I was not hungry in the least. My mom ran to McDonalds and got me a Big Mac and a shamrock shake. The shake made me ill and I could only handle a few bites of the burger before I threw it out.
I keep telling DH about the burrito I HAVE to have after delivery, but it doesn't sound good anymore.
With my first, I labored 19 hours. So when he was finally here, I drank a sprite and went to sleep. I'd say I ate again around dinner time (he was born at 11:18 am). With our 2nd, he was born at 1:47 am. The nurse brought me a pepsi and I drank it and went to sleep. Obviously, I don't mean I pushed him out, had a drink and passed out lol. I spent as much time as possible with baby before hand.

I wasn't hungry during labor but after I sure was. I was admitted at 5:00am and delivered after 1:00pm so I skipped breakfast and lunch while in labor. I think I ate everything on my plate that the hospital gave me and I still looked forward to dinner just a couple of hours later.
I was in labor for over 60 hours and only had clear liquids and half a turkey sandwich during that time. My son was born at 8:30 a.m. and I ordered a Belgium waffle and bacon about an hour later. I was starving and it was delicious.
Both of my boys were born in the morning-- I ate an hour or two after delivery, and im pretty sure it was frosted flakes with both of them.. nurses made me order a big tray and my husband ate the rest just wasn't super hungry..
The day I had my son I had a dr appt that morning at 11. I was complaining to him that I was in severe back pain and pressure. He checked me and I was only dilated to 1 so he sent me on home. I was sick the entire day and did not eat anything. I ended up back at hospital at 7:30 that evening dilated to 5 and my water had broke. I had my son at 2:30 the next morning and by the time I got back to room I was starving! The cafeteria was closed, hubby was asleep because he had been working 24 hours straight and had not been in the bed. Everyone else was gone and the only thing I could find to eat was tootsie rolls. Needless to say this time around I will be packing food.
