Heading to college!

So after I finished high school I was planning on joining the military. Well that never happened. I got in a groove at my job, decided to stay there and not go to college.

Well fast forward a few years and a baby later. I still work at the same place but switched jobs. I now run criminal background checks for a high volume firearm dealer. Better pay but as my kind boss has told me if screw up 80+ people loose their job.

I work with 20+ retired law enforcement and military officers. Hearing all their stories has really resparked my dreams. I've pretty much decided to go to college now and get my degree in Criminal Justice/law enforcement. For a full time student it would take 2 years. I'm thinking with working full time and a family I will take about 3 years.

Any advice from moms who went to college while raising a family? Or advice from anyone in the law enforcment field?

Re: Heading to college!

  • Congrats! It's hard, but doable. I am currently working on my masters degree. Try to work outside of the house if you can. I had so much trouble concentrating on my homework while I was home. I tried to stay late at work to get homework done. I'm so nervous about doing it with 3 kids.

  • I finished my masters in 2013. It is hard work. Make sure that you have family and friends to support you. Don't be afraid to ask for someone to watch your kid so you can study.
  • I went back right after I had dd1. I had my final interview of the teaching program the day before I I had RCS with dd2. I started student teaching when she was 10 was old. It was hard and I did night classes. DH and our family really gave me incredible support and I think that is what for me through it. It's tough but doable! Good for you and good luck!

  • Thanks ladies, it sure will be a lot of work. Not only will have to study my ass off to keep a grade high enough to enter the police academy but I also need to build some serious muscle.
