Yes, she is not there to tell you what to do. She is there to support your decisions and encourage you. She will absolutely suggest things/positions while in labor but it is in your best interest to know what those things are. I think it would be very frustrating being in the middle of labor and having her try to explain things that sound foreign to you. My friend is a doula and offers her own childbirth education class, not sure if yours does. These are just my opinions as last time We took a class but did not hire a doula.
A doula is just someone there to support you isn't she? Is it even worth it? I would have thought that's what your partner is there for. Not trying to sound mean or anything just curious:)
I would...I've learned so much in my class outside of the natural birth information, just general hospital/birthing/process steps that will be useful. It's also really nice to hear questions and experiences other couples have.
Yes, you still need to educate yourself as much as possible, and any doula would tell you that she isn't there to replace your own knowledge and techniques. Doulas are support for you and your partner. She will give you guidance and suggestions, but she can't MAKE you relax, breathe, and go with it. Only you can do that, and a class is a good way to figure out how.
