Post Partum Anxiety and Zoloft

Has anyone else been dealing with awful post partum anxiety?  My doctor put me on Zoloft, because it's one of the few meds he feels is safe to take while breastfeeding, but the other side effects are awful.  LO has also been sleeping like crap since I started it.  The doc said it's not related, but the timing seems too coincidental to completely rule it out.

Anyone else taking meds for anxiety while breastfeeding?  I've actually thought about weaning so that I can change meds, but my older son had a hard time with formula so that's my one huge hold out.

Re: Post Partum Anxiety and Zoloft

  • I've nursed two kids on Zoloft and never noticed a difference with my other that did not have Zoloft while nursing. I would give it more time.

  • I've been taking lexapro since giving birth for anxiety and it has been working really well. I tried Zoloft pre-pregnancy and I hated it. But that might have just been my personal reaction. I'd ask your doctor about lexapro if possible?
  • If your doctor doesn't think the Zoloft is causing the sleep issue, I would believe them. My LO has gone through so many different sleep stages. I think it's a coincidence.

Also... I take Prozac which is pretty much equivalent to Zoloft for safety. You could ask your doctor about that if you are really uncomfortable.
  • I think I'm going to call again and see about switching meds -- or maybe even switching doctors.  It's been a few weeks and I'm not feeling any better.
