LO screams after bath

The last 3-4 times I have given LO a bath, he has screamed to the point of basically losing his breath. Not during the actual bath, he seems to really love it and being in the water. As soon as I am done, I wrap him in a hooded towel and take him to get a diaper and clothes on. I always make sure no ceiling fan is on and I keep him covered with the towel as much as possible. He is always fine until I lay him down to start the getting dressed process. He cries so hard, and he is almost impossible to settle down.

He is normally a very happy baby who rarely cries and overall seems to like his baths, but I am starting to dread them b/c of how much he absolutely freaks out. Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening? The only obvious thing I could think of was that he was cold but I take all proper steps to make sure it isn't.

  • Maybe try warming his towel?

Brooke's been crying lately after I take her out of the bath. I think she loves it too much and doesn't want it to end. I wrap her in the robe and lay her down to start the dressing process when I get the diaper on her I show her some toys or talk to her to calm her down. She usually cries until I have her fully dress. Sometimes the paci works too.

We have the Disney themed towels from bru and they are nice. We have Minnie, Mike & Sully from Monsters Inc and the princess one. She loves them. They have infant sized and toddler sized.

ETA: What I meant is the Disney towels seemed thicker.
  • Probably the temperature change. Can you possibly do the dry off and dressing in a warmer room? I sometimes just do it on the bathmat.

  • HAIR DRYER!!!! Someone on here yelled this same thing at me a month ago and now LO loves loves her baths and is warm and happy afterwards. Just be careful to keep hair dryer moving so it doesn't get too hot. And thanks to whoever suggested it to me!!
  • My LO did this too.  I started closing the bathroom door and letting the water run on hot for a bit to warm up the bathroom before filling the tub (if it worked out, DH and I tried to take our showers before LO's bath also, so the room was even warmer).  During the bath I left the bathroom door closed.  I also brought the diaper and clothes in the bathroom with us, so after the bath she got dried, diapered and clothed in the bathroom.  Seems to work so far.

I'll second the hair dryer! My DS loves it and it's the only thing that calms him after a bath - he usually  screams during the entire bath :(

  • Is LO hungry?  DD knows that her evening routine is bath then breast then bed, and sometimes I think she just gets anxious for the next step.

DS used to cry during and after baths. I finally narrowed it down to hunger. As soon as I started feeding him immediately before his bath instead of after, he went back to loving bathtime.

This. Keep the warm air trapped in the bathroom.

  • I could have written this - same thing here! I think it's the drastic and immediate change in temperature. I'm going to have to try the hair dryer!

Ds gets super impatient and wants to eat so he let's me know it! He's not anxious. Just hungry!
  • It's taken a lot if trial and error for us but what's finally worked for us wrapping her in this and holding her against me for a while:

That's not the same one that I have but same idea. We also drape a hooded towel over to cover her head.

  • We bathe dd in the kitchen and the exhaust fan seems to help calm her. GL!

  • My LO has been like that since her first bath: loving the bath, hating tha aftermath. Things that have helped at various points:
    - letting the bathroom steam up
    - drying off on my lap with her sitting on the towel with her back snuggled into my chest
    - distracting her with toys while getting dressed
    - doing lotion/getting dressed on our bed with cuddle breaks and time for her to roll around/explore
    - the hairdryer on the lowest heat setting
    - wrapping her up tight in the towel, then getting the wet towel off her quickly once she's dry
    - really steady stream of conversation gives her something else to focus on
    - and if all else failed, I let her nurse for a couple minutes still in her towel in the bathroom, to help condition her to associate positive things with getting out of the bath

Can you tell we've tried a few things? Good luck -- it's so sad to see them go from happiest to inconsolable.
  • When appropriate, we warm up the bathroom using an electric heater.  That helps a lot.  We also try to have their bottles warmed and ready because they are raging for food after..and sometimes they do not take a full bottle, but generally they want to drink a little something.

  • Thank you all for the suggestions! I have a few things to try it seems :) The only other thing I can add is that I typically bathe him a little bit after he eats and not when he is hungry...I really think it has to do with the temp change but I think I have lots of options to try thanks to all the suggestions!
