Walking?

yet another walking poll. E is 14 months now and hasn't even tried to walk. I am starting to get nervous even though I probably shouldn't. Any other late walkers out there?

Re: Walking?

  • Nope. But G didn't walk until 15 months so this isn't my first time to the late walker rodeo :)

  • @CL8badB‌, she does cruise a lot and pulls up on everything and is a super speed crawler. She has push walkers, but doesn't like them. I've tried helping her with the walkers and she likes to walk if I hold her hands, but as soon as I try to let go she crumples. That is strange because a month or so ago she would actually stand unassisted for a few seconds and now she won't even do that. So in that sense she's kind of gone backwards. She didn't crawl until almost 10 months, so I expected her to be a little later walking also. She has always seemed a little delayed in her gross motor compared to the other June babies (I don't know if delayed is the appropriate word, but you get my drift). She didn't roll both ways confidently until around 11 months, and didn't learn to sit up/lay down on her own until around that time either (yes, she crawled before learning to roll, you read that correctly). She's a very cautious baby and seems to really hate the falling/unsteady sensation. She seems in the normal range on all of her other skills and even slightly ahead, but she has always been rather "chill" when it comes to getting around. I know it has been said multiple times on our board that you shouldn't compare, but the closer we get to her 15 month check up, the more concerned I get.

  • @thetamedshrew you exactly described Arlo above. And honestly G was by in large ADVANCED in gross motor skills in everything except walking and he STILL didn't walk until 15 months. Arlo is like "I'll just chillax on this pillow over here and watch the chaos" and the doc is in no way concerned. Usually unless there are other circumstances they give "normally" developing babies until 18 months to be concerned for lack of walking. From what you've described it seems she is just cautious and does well getting around so why risk it? I supposedly *tried* to start walking from 8 months on and repeatedly hit my head falling until 13 months. 5 months!!! of failing! now some would say that is an excellent sign of persistence but I think I was just a dummy. i'm glad my babies arent as dumb as their mommy was! When G finally walked he was off and running. He just couldn't be bothered until he could actually be speedy with it.

  • K took a few steps on the day before her first birthday but then didn't do it again for a few weeks. Then she would only walk if we stood her up and encouraged her. Just in the last couple weeks she been confidently walking everywhere on her own. She will be 14 months on the 25th.

  • No walking. Can do it really well as long as he has one hand around one of my fingers. I can barely feel any weight... So I'm sure it's a confidence thing. And he is so fast crawling he probably wants to be able to run before he will bother. We have seen him stand unassisted when he was focused on something else for up to 10 maybe seconds. As soon as he realized it though he would sit.

  • have a late crawler here (she was 12 months before she was crawling) and late to the pull to standing and cruising but she crawls like a machine now and pretty quick getting around. She can let go of her push walker for a few seconds and stand by herself but that's about it. no walking by herself but she does like her push walker now so I figure that is helping.

She used to like to walk with me holding her hands but now she won't do it for long and immediately tries to get down to crawl.

i have a feeling she'll be late to walking game since she was late for everything else.

  • No walking here either try no to worry (I know it's hard). My LO is cruising and walking with a push walker or my hands but he sits the moment I let go. It will just happen one day as long as he continues to progress I wouldn't worry.

  • M is walking, running really. But she's never had the type of personality where she could sit still. My niece on the other hand just started walking in July, at 17 months. She was always content to just chill, and as a result she didn't feel the need to rush to walk.

Over here we had crawling, cruising, and standing unassisted by 7 months.  Then she decided she was pretty much good to go on the moving around front, and nothing much changed until last week at 14.5 months.  Now she's taking a few very unsteady steps.  I'm sure your LO is on her way in her own time!

Reading this is sounds like you have nothing to be concerned about. My DD has also been later with all the gross motor skills so like you said, its not surprising to be later walking as well. She didn't crawl until 10.5 months and if I remember correctly our girls learned to sit up/pull up independently right around the same time. She also never really figured out rolling until later. My DD loves her push walker and she used to walk just holding on to one of our hands, but now she refuses to do that (I car relate to the "regression feeling"). I know she will walk when she is ready. Like PP said, she is bearing weight on her legs and cruising then there is not much to be concerned about. With my DD I can tell she could physically walk, she has the balance, but she is overly cautious so she just drops to crawl. I really don't think there's anything to worry about.
