1st Trimester

Ultrasound measuring 8w2d but 9w6d based of lmp

Hey ladies,

I had an ultrasound down about 15 minutes ago and they said the baby was doing just fine and we saw the babies heartbeat. Sadly, I am confused because I am measuring 2 weeks behind. Do you also believe they don't do photographed sonograms anymore?! Any advice. I had a miscarriage in September.. Baby passed away at 7 weeks it was a missed miscarriage.

  • That recently happened to me as well! From my last menstrual period I counted 9 weeks but the ultrasound dated 7 weeks and 3 days! The doctor said it was fine and not to worry, especially since my periods are irregular. It's still kind of confusing though, feels like it doesn't add up! But as long as baby is healthy, I'll take it! Good luck!

  • If they said everything looks fine I would try not to dwell on it. Seeing the heart beat is a very good sign! You most likely ovulated later.

  • First of all, the heartbeat is a great sign. It sounds like you ovulated later.

My anecdote: I got a positive pregnancy test on May 22nd and had a dating ultrasound more than 2 weeks later where they saw no heartbeat and told me I was measuring at 5 weeks 5 days. Well, that would have made my BFP at less than 3 weeks after LMP. Between that and the dates I had sex, unless DH had super sperm that lived for 10-4 days...I was convinced that there was something wrong. They re-did the dating scan 2 weeks later, and all of a sudden baby was measuring at a size that was more in line with the sex, BFP, and ovulation. This Baby is almost 17 weeks and growing right on track.

I know people say that early ultrasounds are super reliable, but there can be mistakes. And there is also the possibility of a later ovulation or later implantation than what you expected. Even if you are worried about dates based on when you had sex and got a BFP (which was the case for me), there is a possibility the measurement was off or that your baby just hasn't hit a growth spurt but will catch up soon. The important thing is you saw a heartbeat and doctor isn't concerned at this point. At this moment you are pregnant and just focus on that and on loving your little baby.

  • I was a week behind at my 13 week scan baby had caught up. If the doctor wasn't worried I wouldn't be too worried.
  • I just had my 1st ultrasound on Monday. They dated me at 1 week later than I calculated from my LMP. My cycle is consistently longer than the normal 28 days so I wasn't shocked.
We saw the heart beat and my MD stated that since the heartbeat was that strong at this phase (7wks) that the chance of miscarriage drops to about 5%. (Normal miscarriage rate for any healthy woman pregnancy is about 20%.)
I had a transvaginal ultrasound done at the same visit and I got a printout photograph. They used the same machine as an abdominal ultrasound with just a different head attachment. I'd give your MD a call and see if you could get an image if you're worried about it. I wish that we would've video taped the screen to show everyone the heart beating- that was more impressive to us than the actual photograph that just looks like a fuzzy grain of rice.
    Hope this helps!
