Pregnant after a Loss

Did anyone have LEEP procedure done pre-pregnancy (peggels24)

I had the LEEP procedure done about 5 or so years ago.  At my first appointment, my OB (who did the LEEP procedure and who is so awesome) said that he would "keep an eye on me" for any issues.  I have an appointment to see him this Thursday (18 weeks) and I am going to raise the issue with him again to see if there is anything special that has to be done at this point.

Have any of you had any experience with this?  Did you doctors do anything different?  Any special testing?

Re: Did anyone have LEEP procedure done pre-pregnancy (peggels24)

  • I had a LEEP about 10 years ago. When I was pregnant with Jack, I happened to notice after a 17 week appt. that my patient info said "start cervical checks at 16 weeks due to increased risk of PTL due to LEEP procedure". Of course I freaked....I had no check of any kind and I was OVER the 16 week mark. I started asking around and found that a lot....I mean, A LOT, of people had had a LEEP and not one of them had any documented issues including me. Jack's delivery was induced it didn't happen on its own. Better they check you out though just to keep an eye on things, not a bad idea to bring up at the next appt.

Not worried per se - just more curious as to what he meant by "keep an eye" on me.

  • It probably means more frequent cervical checks.  I had a LEEP procedure that removed a significant portion of my cervix and most likely contributed to my loss.  I have an abdominal cerclage placed now to remove any cervical length issues, but still have a trans-vaginal u/s bi weekly (started at 14 wks) just for peace of mind, and bc my Dr. doesn't have much experience with TAC pregnancies.

GL and I hope your cervix stays long and strong! :)

  • No experience with LEEP but I have had a few d and c's and a hysteroscopy and my doctor is taking a closer look at my cervical length because of that. We talked about if I had a LEEP that they would be taking a very close look at the cervical length throughout the pregnancy.
  • I had a LEEP about 9 years before I got pregnant with DS (who is now 3).  The only thing the OB did was schedule me for an extra u/s around the 18wk mark to make sure my cervix was staying closed.  Since mine was fine, I had no additional testing or anything.  I do know that you can get a cerclage if the doctors think your cervix is shortening and need to address it.

  • I had a leep procedure done pre pregnancy. I had to have ultrasounds at 12,16, and 20 weeks to make sure my cervix was shortening. While I was also induced, that was due to pre-e, not the leep procedure.
