3rd Trimester

unexplained weight gain

I went the whole first 2 trimesters only gaining 15 pounds and then from weeks 26 to 30 alone I gained 15. No change to diet or activity and no other explanation as to why the weight gain!! My doctor wants to do a 32 week ultrasound to check the baby's growth and I'm worried because I had been told that unless they thought something was wrong with baby they wouldn't do an ultrasound after the 24 week one. Everything is measuring correctly and the doctor says heart sounds good!!! So what's going on and has anyone else experienced this??

Re: unexplained weight gain

  • My doc has already planned another u/s for me because she seems too be measuring big, but is now also concerned about extra gain over the last two weeks...We'll see what next week brings. If too much again, her concern is it may be a fluid issue.

Next time, ask your doc...Don't let them leave till you understand what and why. That is why you are going to them.

  • It's probably nothing; I've had some weird weight gain due to fluid (10lbs in a month, but I'm really swollen). I've had a growth scan (routine, not because of the weight gain) and everything is fine. I do know someone that gained 20lbs in a month (fairly early on though. I think 18ish weeks) and it turned out to be excess amniotic fluid (polyhydroaminos). She eventually had some fluid removed and the baby was born at term and is perfect.

  • If your doctor seems to be ok with it and has told you everything seems to be measuring well then I'd relax and trust him. At least you get an extra chance to see baby!

  • I blew up almost 8 pounds between appointments that are biweekly, it turned out to be a lot of fluid retention because by my next appointment I was actually down a few of those pounds.  It's possible that the time of day +summer heat + swelling and fluid retention = a lot of "gained weight." I wouldn't stress unless the doctor starts to stress.

  • I had one month where I gained 15 pounds, the doc didn't believe me and made me weigh myself again
  • My OB does the 32 week scan as part of all her patient's regular pre-natal care. It had nothing to do with my LO measuing large or small or how much I've gained. You should ask if there's a specific reason for the scan though if their office told you there wouldn't be another scheduled scan after 24 weeks.

I've had the same thing happen with the weight gain. I've had weeks where all I ate was salad and chicken and somehow gained more than if I had eaten cheeseburgers and fries. I just chalk it up to how my body's changing throughout the pregnancy. If your doc isn't worried about the sudden weight gain then you shouldn't be. I've gone one month not gaining anything and then the next month I gained enough for both combined. The weight gain schedules are generalized and not everyone's body follows it.

  • I am going through this too and was worried about excessive weight gain as a sign of pre-eclampsia. As long as it is not accompanied by protein in your urine, increased blood pressure, pain in your lower sternum, change or loss of vision... there are a few specific signs.  But your doctor should say something if that is what they are looking for.
