Crib question (Target vs BBB)

Anyone have any opinions on getting a crib from Target? I'm looking and they are (obviously) much cheaper than BBB even with the 20% coupon from BBB. Right now Target is doing $100 off $500+ in nursery furniture. Is it worth it or would the $320 (on the crib) we would spend at BBB worth it in quality?

I just ordered a crib and a dresser from Target this weekend. I got the Delta Haven crib and the Eddie Bauer Langley dresser. I saw them both in the store and they look like good quality. I picked up the crib in the store but haven't put it together yet. The dresser still hasn't shipped. They were $249 and $279 retail and I ended up paying $403 with coupons and the red card discount. It was tax free weekend in my state last weekend and that's why I ordered them this early.

I think Delta and Eddie Bauer both make good products and I don't think being sold in Target make them any less superior. I was gonna get the Eddie Bauer Langley crib but people commented that they couldn't find the conversion kit that's why I decided on the Delta.

I just got a bedroom set from Target. Im a FTM but honestly when I checked out the cribs at BBB they seemed to be of similar quality. We also had a tax free weekend last weekend. So that with the $100 off, using a red card to get 5% off and free shipping and handling was totally worth it.

  • I bought my crib through amazon, but it is also sold at BBB. It is solid! It was also more expensive. I wanted something that I can use for future babies. It was an investment piece I guess. The target ones looked good too, I just couldn't find one that I liked.

  • I have said this before but there has to be a reason for something to be as cheap as that Eddie Bauer stuff.
    I agree, that's why I'm hesitant.

One of my friends just reminded me that I have the 'Baby Bargains' book, I'm going to be looking through that tonight to see what it has to say to help me figure out this decision. I'm having a hard time swallowing ~$1000 on furniture vs ~$600. But I have time,  I can shop around and maybe find a good compromise on both. ;-)

  • I've had AWFUL luck with the quality of furniture from Target.  I have bought 2 end tables, a desk, a coffee table and 3 bookshelves from them and they all fell apart within 2 years.

Just for another perspective, I've had better luck with non-nursery target furniture. Bookshelves lasted me 3-4 annual moves each (and I LOAD them), though they were looking a little sad by the end (IKEA Billys stand up better, FYI). My target tv stand has held up well since 2010 and looks no worse for the wear. Just check out the pieces in the store and make sure they look decently put together - you can usually tell.

Sometimes the cost difference can be in overhead, supply chain, advertising - things that don't necessarily make a difference in physical quality. No idea if that's true of Eddie Bauer but that company has so much mail order that it might be a factor. Or might be outsourced, etc. I have no actual idea why, just guessing.

  • Bought the Delta Bentley from Target and it's beautiful... Solid stained wood. Hardware was sturdy. I don't have any concerns. Got it on sale and now it's discontinued. Delivery was fast, and the first box came damaged so we exchanged with no issues. We don't have a BBB, but ordered online regardless.

Research the brand, not the store.  I went to 1000 (okay, 4) furniture stores and BBB, Target, BRU, PBK.  I found out that I really liked the quality of the Munire cribs and dressers.  They sell them at BBB and furniture stores.  In the end, I bought mine on Wayfair because of the price and shipping time (2 weeks vs. 12).  In the end, the retailers are the same with the exception of set up, delivery charges, and logistics.  If you're unsatisfied, you can return items.  For the record, I am really happy that I went with Wayfair and Munire.  Also, you can find many of these items on Amazon - with Prime shipping!

looks like @bvsbabymomma and I have the same story!

FTR: I actually bought some furniture (end tables and ottoman) from Walmart.com and have had them for years and absolutely love them.  I'm a total snob, I'm not gonna lie.  So, it surprises me every day that the quality is so good.  Even with 70lb dogs jumping on them.

  • I ordered a Storkcraft Crib and changing table/dresser from Target. It is a 4 in 1 conversion crib to bed. I doubt it makes it to the stage 4, but I got it on sale with Target for $180 and if it lasts 2 years, essentially I got my money out of it. I am short and the front of the crib is 36" high, I can reach anywhere in there at this time to reach baby and I like that. I am happy with it, I could have spent over $1000 for a solid wood, not compressed wood and it still woukd have the same life span. My nephew chewed the shit out of his and my sister spent a fortune. The changing table/ dresser is nice though. It is heavy and solid with a lot of room. It also came with the wall anchors.

  • We got the Simmons Madisson convertible 4 in 1 from Target a few months ago when you could get the Simmons reversible crib mattress for free...obviously we haven't used it yet, but other than it taking DH forever to figure out where they hid the packet with the screws and stuff it was super easy to put together and it's really sturdy and beautiful looking. The mattress we got is super nice too, the deal was an absolute steal!!

  • @klmurner‌ we also got the Delta Bentley set :) love it!

We spent about $500 for everything with discounts. We just couldn't pass up what a great deal it was.

We looked everywhere and liked the style we picked at target much better than more expensive ones. After looking into the brand, I was fine with it coming from target as it's sold other places as well, but just the set we wanted was from target.
  • Does target.com have any reviews on the product? They might rate the quality for your value.

My sister bought her cribs at Target in the $100 range and they have been working very well for them. She did ALOT of research before her twins were born, and basically said it's not worth it to buy super expensive. Her cribs are just as safe. Her twins are 2 years old now and the cribs have been holding up very well.

I found a crib at BBB that costs about $199, and it only has good reviews on the site. They all comment on how it is very sturdy, and it meets all the safety qualifications. Right now it's my front runner.

  • On a similar note, we are considering a crib and other furniture from IKEA, does anyone have any experience with IKEA cribs?
  • My DH wasn't impressed with the quality of the furniture available at our Target. We ended up going with a set from Nebraska Furniture Mart for around $850 which included the mattress. We will be using it for at least 2-3 kiddos so it was an investment worth making.
  • I can't speak to the quality of the cribs, but we ordered our glider from Target and had the most awful experience. If you can pick it up in store, go for it but I would avoid shipping a large item with Target (& their carrier HomeDirect). After countless hours on the phone (a month after the scheduled delivery date) they realized they lost the package. We won't order anything online from them again. It was suuuch a headache. I know BBB has the 20% off coupon, plus they have lots of floor models on sale right now if you are looking for a bargain!

  • The prices vary depending on two things -- the quality of wood and where it's made. That's all that goes into crib pricing, really. Of course you have the high end brands that have the best wood and/or were made in the US, then add their popularity and the prices skyrocket. Baby Bargains really gives the lowdown on each nursery furniture company and where to buy furniture for the best value, so I'd definitely look there first if you're struggling to make a decision.

Personally, we go with BBB for our nursery furniture. We did for both girls and yeah, we spent about $500 each, but for us it was worth it. They'll convert to toddler beds then full beds, so we'll hopefully only need to buy mattresses later down the line.

  • We're going with ikea also @emilynolson never bought baby furniture from there, but it's what we can afford and we like it. Never had problems with anything else from there
  • Just for the record, unless you're buying solid wood (expensive--moreso than BBB), it's all the same. We bought Storkcraft furniture from Amazon (but sold lots of places), and it barely made it through DD. It's all particle board. If I had it to do over again, I would buy solid wood furniture and wait for a sale from our local baby boutique or Amish furniture store. But anyway, Storkcraft, Delta, Da Vinci, etc., etc. All of those brands are basically the same stuff, no matter where you buy them.

  • remember, the furniture will still be the same thing regardless where you buy it.  it depends on what you're buying.  a cheaply made crib will still be cheap whether it was $420 or $240 whereas a better brand/manufacturer will usually be more pricey from the start.  if the brand is the same, go for the cheaper price

  • As long as it meets safety standards and is made of a durable wood, you are fine. Ours is from BBB but it was a gift. It was 399 which I didn't think was that bad compared to others out there.
