Night time hip pain - any advice?

No matter which side I sleep on, after an hour or two, I wake up with searing pain in whichever hip was on the bottom.  Roll over, repeat.  All night long.  The only sleep pillows I'm currently using are the ones for my head and a smaller throw pillow under my belly to support it.  Frankly, now that DH is home from the hospital, there's not a lot of room for more pillows in our bed, and few spare pillows in the house because they're all being used to keep his leg elevated, but if there is a strategic pillow placement that might help this problem with my hips, I'll try and figure out a way.  Thanks!

Re: Night time hip pain - any advice?

  • Same here. And the pain sometimes goes all the way to my knee. :( No advice, but I will definitely be following this thread to see the recommendations!

  • No real advice here either but I had this issue a few nights ago too.  It sucks. :(

I got up and did a lot of cat-cow stretches and pelvic tilts.  Not sure if that's what helped or if baby just moved into a new position, but I gave it a shot!

  • Sounds like maybe sciatic nerve pain. That's how mine started a few weeks ago. Pelvic rocks are supposed to help.

  • I have tailbone pain and started sleeping with a pillow between my knees. I bought it from Amazon for less than $20; it's a memory foam pillow shaped specifically for between-the-knees use. The first several nights I used it I noticed my muscles in my hip region were sore when I woke up in the morning, but in a good way. Overall I have noticed improvement, but I won't say it's a miracle-worker!
  • I have a pillow for between my knees. From working in a chiropractors office, I don't know if I will ever sleep without one again. I get that awful hip pain too. If your able, while laying on your side try and pull your knee up as close to your belly as you can get it. It is definitely a sciatic thing, so when you stretch ( you should feel a nice stretch in your butt) it may help. I know it helps me, hope it helps you :)
  • Pelvic tilts right before bed and a pillow between the knees.  Occasionally, I take about 10 min and doze on my hands and knees with my head down on my pillows and my ass in the air to relieve some of the pressure.  Super sexy, I'm telling you.

  • I have been doing some hip stretches before bed, but admittedly not a whole lot.  So I will add to that.  @Syllessa, I know exactly the position you're describing, and I agree, sexy as hell, but it does help.

I'll try a pillow between my knees, too.  I've done that to help with low back and pain in the top hip, but I didn't know if it would help with the bottom hip.  But I will definitely try!

    Thanks guys!

  • My hips hurt too... Whatever side I sleep on now when I wake up and manage to turn my whale-like stomach over my hip hurts for few minutes. This is new as of last week. I do everything the chiropractor told me to do.  Pillow between legs, back support (my snoogle) pillow to lift the belly. The LO is just getting big.

  • I went out and bought a memory foam mattress topper from wal-mart for about $50 and it has been much better.  I still hurt some nights but it is not every night like it was.
  • Omg, I don't know how anyone can survive without the between the knee pillow support!! I started getting pain around 20 weeks. I got a Mommy Boppy and it's been my savior. I'm having different hip pain now, in the inner groin area, but that's from pelvic ligaments stretching slightly as she's getting ready to make her way down.
  • I also recommend a pillow going from above your knees to your feet.  I use a cheap Target body pillow (about $10) and it works well.

  • I put one between my knees and one under my back so I sleep at a 45 degree angle basically
  • I try putting my knee out to the side on the affected side. I also noticed that the firmer the surface, the more it hurts. So I cushion my tush if I can.

  • I use a small rectangular pillow between my knees.  With a huge one, I find I'm waking up every time I roll over, but this is just a decorative pillow that happens to be the perfect size.

Also, a trick from my physical therapist...Take a hand towel and roll it up or fold it up and when you are laying on your side, put it under the natural curve in your waist.  It helps to support and maintain the natural curve you have so that your whole side isn't sinking into the mattress while your hips are also doing wonky things...

  • I started having pain in my hips at about fifteen weeks.  I finally broke down and bought a Snoogle pillow.  It has been one of the best purchase I have made during this pregnancy.  The pillow really helped relieve my hip pain and I sleep soooo much better.  I was worried at first that it would take up too much room in the bed, but I have a queen size bed and my DH and I fit in it comfortably with the pillow included.  It almost acts as the line to divide my side from his side (I'm really big about having my own space while sleeping).  If you don't want to spend the money on that, I would definitely try sleeping with a small pillow between your knees.  That helped at little before I bought the Snoogle.
  • Yup, keeps me awake all night. Literally the same thing. Left side, hip hurts, sleep on back. Hip hurts on back, sleep on right side. Right side hurts, sleep on left. REPEAT. Not only is this rotation for my hip pain, but it's also for the congestion on each side.

I've tried all sorts of positions and placements of ALL the pillows but the only thing that helps is frequent rotation. Also, one night I woke up at 12 am with a searing migraine so I took some tylenol. I remember that night I had significantly less hip pain.

  • I know the whole sleep on your left side thing is best but the hip pain can really get unbearable. So when that happens I prop up my back with pillows and get a couple of hrs on my back, at about a 45 degree recline just to relieve the pressure on either leg. Then it's back to the flip-flopping left to right.

  • Same thing here. I sleep with a king size pillow between my legs with part of it under my belly. I still flip flop all night and am getting up to pee 5-6 times a night. Sooo annoying! The hip pain started around 25 weeks and I'm 32 weeks now. It's hard to get comfortable in any position! Glad to know I'm not alone!!
  • I've frequently had to get up and do 15 min of yoga around 2:00 am to stretch out my hips, glutes, and calves.

  • Wow, at least I know I'm not the only one dealing with this stuff!  Sorry everyone is so uncomfortable, and thanks for all the tips.

I tried some additional stretching and adding a few pillows last night, and I was pretty good until DH got in bed and I had to lose the one I had behind my back.  Still, one between my knees did help.  I'm up every 2 hours tending to him right now anyway, so it's not such a big deal to change positions, but I'm really looking forward to not having to get up quite so much!

  • I don't think this has been mentioned...massage! I had a prenatal massage last week, and I told the MT I was having hip pain, so she massaged right where I had been having pain. She used a lot of pressure, and it was a little uncomfortable, but that night I had no hip pain! Since then I have been getting DH to spend 10 min on each hip before bed, and it helps sooo much. It works better than the body pillow, for me.
