Shampoo & Conditioner

So...I usually just buy whatever is on sale at Target (within reason, but think Patene, Fruitice, etc.) I was talking to a group of people (some of them hair stylists) and they said I might as well wash my hair with dish soap thats how bad it is for your hair.

Do I really need to use a high end shampoo and conditioner or is that just what hair stylists say?
:-@

FWIW, my hair has been awful lately. Very dry and frizzy. So does it really make a difference and if so, any recs?

Re: Shampoo & Conditioner

  • I used to coupon, so I have a wide variety of shampoos and conditioner from cheap to not so cheap. I personally can tell a difference, but I don't know what makes the difference, iykwim. I like John Frieda as a nice mid price product. My absolute favorite is from L'Occitane, but that is $25 per bottle, so not something I do all the time. Cheaper products tend to leave my hair too dry, or too dull.

  • I use Herbal Essence Naked and get compliments all the time on how shiny and healthy my hair looks.
  • My stylist told me if I wasn't going to buy salon products, buy Dove.

  • I love Dove. DH actually bought it for himself to use. Then I decided to use it too!

  • I tend to buy cheap shampoo and fancy conditioner.  I really think I can feel the difference in the quality of conditioner but not of shampoo.  But that's definitely not an expert opinion.  Just my own observations.

  • I also use Suave, but I tend to switch between flavors. Something about Suave really agrees with my hair. I think the mint one leaves it the smoothest.
  • My in laws own a hair salon and my MIL uses john Frieda and another stylist there swears by the new suave line with Moroccan oil and her hair looks great.

  • I've used Aveda and Pantene and I really don't notice a huge difference. I like Aveda but will still use the store stuff, too.

  • I'm picky about my shampoo because of my curly hair.  I can definitely tell a difference between what I use and what DH uses (suave).  I use Redken All Soft Shampoo - no conditioner though.  I tend to buy the liter when it's on sale.  I just got a liter at beauty brands for $10.  It will last a very long time.

  • The only shampoo I've ever used (including sauce and expensive salon brands) that didn't give me terrible dandruff was Pantene, so I'm a fan. That said, I switched to just conditioner last fall and my hair has never looked better. I use either John Frieda or Pantene and both are great.

  • Half the time I use deva curl, the rest of the time no poo (baking soda & acv). It's great for frizzy curly hair :)
